I used to install glass. Are the gaskets new or used? If they are used it will be harder because the they are not as pliable as they were when new. There is an easy trick to installing these. You will need some thin strong rope like clothes line. First you put the gasket on the glass, then you lube the gasket where the pinch weld goes, then you start on the bottom in the middle and put the line in the gasket where the pinch weld will end up. make sure you leave enough line exposed on the bottom so you can pull it easily. It will help to lube it again, spray silicone will work fine dont use an oil base lube. Then you set the glass in the opening and start to pull the line while someone else puts light pressure on the glass. when you pull the line it will force the rubber to go on the pinch weld. the corners will be the hardest part to pull. They sell hook tools to help it along just go slow. You work your way all around slowly. When the line is all pulled out push on the glass around the edge with the palm of your hand and fingers this will set it in place This is the time you will crack the windshield. I would start with the back lite (glass)because it is much stronger cuz it is tempered and it is not laminated You can buy a sealer to put between the glass and gasket and the gasket and car body do this on the top and 1/3 of the way down the sides, or drive it to an auto glass or body shop and have them do it. Thats it. Just take your time, it will go. For an experienced installer it should take no longer then 20 mins. per lite (glass). No glass company will gaurantee against breakage if they use your glass or used glass. 99% of the time it will not break. If you do it do it in the sun to help soften the gasket. Its even eaiser if there is no gasket around the glass. Ill bet there is a video on utube covering this. New glass is probably still available for less then 200. Good Luck!

I couldn't find anyone that seemed to have any experience with old cars so I found good instructions like the ones posted above and me and my wife did it ourselves for the back lite of my Satellite. It probably took about 20 minutes using the pull the rope technique. My wife pulled on the rope, I gently pushed on the glass. She still talks about how cool it was to do something like that ourselves.

If you search online, you will find all the tricks for how to do it yourself. It's not that hard.

I have done a number of them over the years, probably 30-40 in total.
IIRC, only broke one, a 67 Chev truck.
From all I have heard/read, I am doing it wrong.
Do it in the sun, have the rubber as warm/flexible as possible. Clean the rubber with lacquer thinner or something appropriate, last thing is no grit Gojo.

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING METAL should come in contact with the glass!

I use no grit Gojo for lube. Probably just my dream, but I think this also soften the rubber. My dream, let me have it.

Work slowly.

I install the rubber into the opening, then put the top of the glass into the rubber, and start working around the edges with thin sort of knife edged flat pieces of hardwood, most of mine I made from broken hammer handles. I have some nylon ones also.
Use plenty of lube.
At some point you will have it in the channel, and it will just need a little pressure for things to drop into place. Don't go crazy with the pressure, short of letting it touch metal, this is where things are most likely go bad.
Wipe it off, let things dry.
This is where I usually use a pump can of sealer and go around the glass and especially around the pinch weld/rubber area to seal for water leaks.
Install lock strip.
Clean things up, if you are as sloppy as me this is a beeaatch. Usually I just let things dry and scrape the excess on the glass with a razor scraper.
Last ones I did are in my VL21, done it twice, first time had leaks, had to pull and redo. Same glass, and rubber.

THIS IS TRIPLE IMPORTANT!!! MAKE SURE YOUR MOULDING CLIPS ARE IN PLACE FIRST!!!

All this being said, I have to do my D150 someday...already got a used glass (nice recent replacement from upullit) but am concerned about doing the job myself.
I sort of figure I only have $35 in the glass. If I break it, then I will spend the money ($250) for someone to guarantee the install.
Knock on wood, so far I am ahead.

DISCLAIMER!! I am pretty sure this is not the way my body man/painter/mentor/friend TRW taught me!
And the one time I absolutely positively wanted to change some glass in a couple new 74 D series trucks without breakage he did it for me, flawlessly. I did the heavy looking on.

I never got the grasp of the rope trick, though I understand it, and have seen it done.

My Demon cira 1995ish was $125 new front windshield $80 for installation.

So $100 in todays money doesn't seem bad at all.

so i just got quoted $250-$350! i guess that is the price of living in the bay area...

does anyone know of another bay area shop to try? it has to be someone that has experience with these cars, i don't want to trust it to someone that hasn't done this before.

When my brother had the windshield put in his 67 Coronet convertible, he had Safelite do it. The guy there was kinda lost as his old car experience was appearently on Chevys. I had to copy pages from my factory mopar manual and take to them so they could get it right. It came out good and he was happy. My boss had Manasero's Glass in West Sacramento do his 70 D200. That guy has been in business for a LONG time, so I guess he knows what he's doing. My boss was happy with his too. That's all I got.

Is it for the car in your sig?

Remember some cars (like my demon) use gaskets, some (like my 71 Sat ) use butyl.

Butyl is nasty stuff to deal with, cutting your old one out, trying to clean the old stuff, and setting the new one in square first try because if its off slightly it can be a pain to redo.

I've actually been toying with the idea of using the urethane like they use on new cars on my sat next time it gets done.

Much more stronger then butyl.

But butyl vs gasket could be why you got such a high price.

I have to do this to my Challenger too, and fairly soon. I'm just going to leave it for last and drive it to the glass shop without the windows. I need a new windshield anyways, and the rear window can go in the trunk. I wouldn't even pull the old crap out if i didn't have to do rust repair around the windows. Dammit.

Just wear some old-school top fuel goggles when you drive it...

There's a couple guys in the Denver area, and they are mobile. Might cost you a little more because of your proximity to the metro area.

720.329.8422 Steve Craft. Be prepared to possibly wait on him. He knows his stuff, just a little flaky. He R&R'd my Ramcharger glass for $35. He was $125 for a brand new Pilkington for the W350.

I haven't used this guy, but my friend uses him all the time for cars he resells. He said it's very good work, but is a little more expensive. 303.995.0986 Dave Lamontagne

Both guys know old stuff. Hope that helps some.

Not sure if this is even a possibility for you but how about renting a car trailer or tow dolly to get it there. I've rented the car trailers from Uhaul for about $60 per day. Thats how I got mine to the glass shop.

yes, it is for the road runner, and i have a new gasket.

it has a windshield in it and so is drivable. i would actually love to take a road trip to denver, (i grew up there), but that is out of the cards for now.

the windshield in it is so pitted that it is literally blinding when facing anywhere near the sun, which is why i want to replace it. it is downright dangerous at times.

so not sure what i'm going to do...

I paid $300 to have a mobile auto glass guy come out to my place and install a new windshield and reinstall my back glass.

Have you tried to polish it? It's possible. Do a search if you're interested, or start a new thread.

Have you checked with other auto glass installers? I was charged $50 to reinstall my '68 roadrunner (old)glass. Try staying away from national chain stores..

or do it yourself

i think i brought this up once before, and people more or less said that polishing won't work. the pits are deep and visible, and to do an entire windshield would probably be much more money than just replacing it.

i will look into it again though, as the new glass option is getting expensive.

i think i'm going to call a couple of local body shops and get recommendations. i do want someone who has experience with old cars, or at least claims to. i'm not interested in being someone's training guinea pig.

i've thought of doing it myself, but time... and with the lack thereof, just don't feel like spending the time to learn this and possibly screw up.
