i have a fresh 408 indy headed sb with solid roller cam. used primarily on the street. what weight oil should be used? it has .002" main and rod bearing clearance, but the t&d rockers dump alot of oil with the grooved cam jounals and full groove mains. also, when can synthetic oil be used? i'm concerned with rings seating well.

I would use a 15/40 or 20/50 with a good filter, i would switch at about 2k miles to syn.

After breakin you can switch & use the lightest weight of oil that will maintain "adequate" pressure.

Read this Break in secrets.

Then use a 10W-40 or 15W-40 synthetic oil and you should be good to go.

I agree. I had to drop a weight in oil to help get my pressure down. I run 30-40 psi at idle and
60-70 psi @ 25oo rpm hot. Was higher than that with heavier oil!

thanks robert. interesting read. it may be to late for proper break-in. i have 160 miles on it now with some hard acceleration and decellaration, mostly cruising with varying throttle positions.

Royal Purple 10-40 per my builder after 2500. Did a few WOT's before 2500. All is well after 20 thousand street miles. 440.
