What's a good 60 foot time to shoot for in a street/trip car?

Here's some particulars about my car:

'67 Satellite, 3780 pounds with driver, all steel, full interior, manual steering, manual brakes, Monroe-matics front and back (back are longer length for a pickup truck), 318 torsion bars, battery in stock location, iron heads, 3400 pound SS Springs, regular non-adjustable pinion snubber, 3.91 gears, 9X27" Hooiser Quicktime Pro DOT bias-ply slicks on cop rims, front swaybar still hooked up, mild 440, 9.5" Converter.

I took it to the 1/8 mile strip for the first time last weekend and made ten runs. Most of my 60 foot times were consistently 1.82 and I had one 1.78. It didn't seem to matter if I did a longer burnout, shorter burnout, left from an idle, left at 2000 rpm, what time of day it was. It ran within a few hundreths (8.31 to 8.35) all day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Are these 60 foot times good, bad, OK? I have no idea.

What should I do to improve my 60 foot? Remove front swaybar? Adjustable pinion snubber? 90/10 shocks? Put in 4.10s (car wasn't shifting into third into right before 1/8 mile finish line and we don't have any 1/4 mile tracks around here anymore anyway)? Anything else? Thanks!

1.50-1.55 would be pretty good... front sway bar should
go... better shocks all around and depending on if
the SS springs are worn out or not but maybe the
caltrac set up and if your springs arent worn out
dump the snubber... my buddy has a ford PU and will
pull a 1.50 60' all the time at 3900#

What's more important, Street or Strip?

Is it spinning?

You already have one thing in your favor. A car/driver combo that will repeat is a real good start. If BOTH are not consistant, you can't tell if a change helps or hurts.
I think Mike is a bit optimistic on his 1.5xx 60' expectation though. I would think at this point you could obtain mid to high 1.6xx with some tuning.

Was that at Barona,on the RES on the moutain? If you can get what you have to 60 ft in the 1.60 you'll be doing good If you where at Qualcom Staduim how where everyone else you know doing with similar cars?

How high does the converter flash? Seems like it could be better but 1.5 seems a little fast for the average street car that doesnt run 11.00 or faster off a foot brake.

Wallace calc shows 1.83 for an 8.31, you are better than that.

This was at Barona up on the mountain. I even got to drive there through the twisties in the fog on slicks and pizza cutters. Good times!

I've heard to expect to run about a tenth slower if I try Qualcomm.

Right now strip is more important to me than street. I putt-putt around like a grandpa with it on the street. I can't tell how much it is spinning. I do know if goes nice and straight, no wheel hop, doesn't do anything funny.

Not sure where the converter is flashing, I was told it would flash at 4200.

Low 1.7's high 1.6's is about all you should expect to get. Some cars will never achieve that unless you are willing to experiment with different converters and such.

My car when it ran 7.90-8.10 would 60 foot 1.65-1.69ish

Maybe... the only thing is he doesnt state the stall
of the conv... but if its near 4000 stall he should
get a 1.60 or better if he changes the set up

My buddies PU is a street car/truck.. he drives it
all the time in the summer... in the heat it will
1.55 60' and the best in the cool weather was a 1.48...
he runs a home made set of caltracs with a modified
set of stock springs ... he has run drag week twice
and took first in hot rod class both times... and
yes he foot brakes it... normally runs 11.40-50

Converter is a Dynamic 9.5" that they said would flash to 4200 RPM with my combo. Can't confirm that because I was too preoccupied paying attention to other things.

The SS Springs are new 3400 pound ones.

I'm thinking about ditching the front swaybar and trying some 90/10 front shocks in place of the Monroe-matics next. Are there any of the inexpensive 90/10 shocks like the Summit house brand or the Competition Engineering ones worth trying? Or should I spend the extra coin for the Calvert 90/10s? Just trying to squeeze every last tenth off the ET. I'm not worried about how the 90/10s will handle on the street - done it before and it was no big deal. If I can get it to do a 7.99 in the 1/8th, I'll be happy for now. For now...

Maybe I just need more seat time for that. I wasn't really even paying attention to what RPM I was shifting at, just did it by feel. I was too preoccupied by not throwing my crappy stock console shifter into neutral or reverse to watch the tach.

Thanks again for any ideas! Just getting back into this after a 25 year haitus.

Did it MPH around 82 or so? If so it's running about right for all the incrementals. Chipping at the 60' is great way to learn what works and get the ET down.

The sway bar slows front end reaction. Without it would be good from both a movement and weight basis.

Is the front end alignment spot on?

Snubber = door stop. Clamp the front segments if you want it to hook well and loosen the rear straps so the springs can separate.

How much front end travel from static to extension? Should have about 5+" and really free. No binding. A good 90-10 shock would be nice.

The difference between a good converter and a decent one is night and day.

Buy another set of super stock springs for a 3800#. Install the pinion snuber with 1 inch clearance. Buy a cheep set of front springs to drive on street and check the tire pressure per manufacture because radial tires have to have a little more pressure than bias.

Yeah, it ran 82 mph every time. Alignment is spot on. 165/80-15 radials that were set to 42 psi. Bias ply DOT slicks were set to 15 psi all day. Haven't measured the front end travel yet.

Do you need to unclamp the rear segments and clamp the front segments on Superstock Springs?

Also, no subframe connectors on this car.

I'm at 1.60 like to get it down to 1.52-55. Depends on the set-up. I'd guess 1.70 depending on how "mild" the 440 is. I tired un-hooking and removing the front sway bar on an old 67 coronet, made Zero difference 1.68 was it. Car ran 12.90 @ 103 (3850lbs)

I believe 8.30's in the 1/8 is like high 12's in the 1/4. I know my Dart years back ran a 7.86 which was a 12.31 and when it only did 8.0's to 8.10 it ran 12.50's to 12.70's. It usually 60 ft in the 1.70 area. With your mph and combo right now I dont think you will do alot better until it makes some more power. I mean dont matter what comverter and gear it has if it dont have the power to pull it you can only 60 so much. I would work on tunning and some more mph first. Most low 12 street/strip cars 60 in the 1.70's to 1.60's at best. To get low 12's you need close to 90 mph in the 1/8. I just dont think with the mph you are pulling you can 60 much better. Ron
