Well I am finally almost at the point where I am ready to install the sail panels I have in my Charger SE. I just had a few questions about how to best install them so they look nice. The new sail panels I have are already covered but the vinyl hangs freely off the sides. Do I need to wrap that back myself and glue it down to the backside of the carboard? One edge has double sided tape so I am guessing maybe that would be for that purpose? When I install them in, should they be installed before or after the package tray? Also any recommendations on how to fasten? The only thing I see to physically hold them on is one clip on the back and a screw hole where the SE louvers overlaps one edge to secure it. Is this enough or do I need to use adhesive as well to glue them down? Any pointers in this area would be appreciated! I spent a LOT of time getting my headliner in and I want to make sure the sail panels look as good as the headliner did! Thanks Moparts!!

What year Charger is it? I thought the Chargers had a molded plastic sail panel. To my knowledge only the Plymouths had card board panels, and contrary to what is for sale out there, none were ever covered with headliner material.Better do some research.I spent a lot of money on junk before I learned my lesson.
Car is a 73 Charger SE. I think some (or all maybe) of the 71/72 may have had the molded panels but my OEM panels were covered cardboard. That I am sure of.

I have a friend that has one of those let me check with him. I just talked to him and he said they the old ones had clips and his new ones didn't . I could go over there and try to look at them. From what I remember from the old days you could take the tray out and the panels stayed in, so I'd put the panels in first. If you want you can call me at 423-587-0624 after nine. What part of Carolina are you in?

The new ones did not come with the clip but they had providions for it on the back so I transplanted my old clips onto the new panels. I am concerned about what holds the top of the sail panel flush with the headliner. I want to make sure it makes a nice joint.
I am in Apex, just west of Raleigh.

since we are sort of on the topic, what is the best material to use for recovering said panel boards? my original 71 roadrunner panels were covered in a grainless, almost paper type substance. I had an upolstry shop claim he could match it perfectly and all he used was some vinal that doesn't look right at all..

I would think you would want them to match the headliner material as closely as possible. Mine are covered in the exact same material my headliner is made off. I have a ton extra in black if you need any.

Thank you very much for the offer, but Im 100% sure that my untouched interior didn't have headliner material on the sail panels.. not to mention my interior is gold haha

The originals had the same texture as the package tray, but was pressed multi layer cardboard material. After going round and round with REM, who played dumb on the subject, I had them to make me a pair out of the same stuff as the package tray. With the correct texture I painted it and installed it. It was kinda hard because it was thicker and didn't want to conform to the proper shape, but finally worked. For all you 71-74 B body people put there, you wouldn't believe the junk and incorrect stuff that we buy, and when I confront the sellers about it all they say is" well, no body else complained, just you" This is from everything from ralley wheels to trunk mats, which are wrong too. Just ask me if you want to know more.

Interesting becuase I knew mine were cardboard but I had figured they must have been covered with headiner material... I am guessing maybe this is not the case and the covering is a shortcut they use now. I can see how this woudl be an issue for a concourse type resto but my car is more of a resto/resto-mod so I am OK with a little deviation as long as it looks good. So here's a good question then, I am waiting on the new package tray and insulation from YearOne and I am wondering if I can use the plastic OEM-type push clips or are those so different now that they won't work? Good information guys!

On the package tray, I'm not sure who makes Year Ones, I think their made by REM, ck. to make sure. And I don't know about 73-74, but I would think they are the same. My 71 had the push metal type that were molded into the tray and then pushed into the metal shelf. And no REMs don't have them, unless my complaining has changed the way they make them, so all you can do is hope that the seat back holds it down. And with the jute backing in place,it wants to stand up in the middle like my did, it might and it might not stay down. On the subject of... my car is only a driver so who cares, that is why they make krapp. If everybody would demand the correct parts they would have to make them. It doesn't cost much more to do it right the first time. And think about if you ever try to sell the car,and a buyer is deducting from the asking price, because of substandard parts that he is going to have to replace.I've got brand new parts that are sitting in a box because they look like krapp. Want to buy them? I have heard that ECS has the correct type but don't know if they have 71-74's though. What I'm getting at is these vendors are selling and representing this stuff as correct and nobody is calling them on it.
