Im going to look at an engine tomorrow that is supposed to have came from a 70 Cuda. The guy says its complete, carbs to oil pan. Is there any sure way to tell. My friend says to look for a 'big' balancer. I've never had or seen a diffrent balancer other than the standard one that seems like it was on all 383's & 440's

Will the block have the casting 440-6 on the side?? What can you guys tell me?????????????

Only real way to tell is if it has the cast pistons with 4 valve reliefs and 3 bolt timing chain. If out of a '70, it will have F440Hp or HP2 stamped on the id pad up top. The VIN stamping on the passenger side oil pan rail will be stamped 0B***** if it was in fact out of a '70 'Cuda or Challenger. The "big" balancer was used on all 440 4bbl Hi-Po and 6bbl engine starting in 1970-1972. The end carbs should be 4382 and 4383 (center #'s were different depending on tranny). The block part # is the same for all '70 440's. The 440-dash # is the core shift IIRC.

Pick it up and drop it on your foot, if it hurts, it's real.

The balancer will look different. It has a half moon weight on the front. Also the block will be stamped 440hp. It should have the big rods 908 or 906 casting number. Can't remeber which is the part # and which is the casting #. But all 440's with the big rods have the larger balancer, also the converter or flywheel have weights on them. The balancer will NOT be stamped cast crank.

So after all that please tell me how a person would know its a "real 440-6" vs one that was just put together with the above parts?????

Ha! Thats what thought? Its suppose to have a 4speed trans to go with it. Also (you guys are going to flip) There;s suppose to be a 72 Road Runner sitting there also with a 440 with the Edelbrock 6pak intake thats also 100% complete, AND its suppose to have 4speed too, BUT its rusted real bad.

I will take pics IF this turns out to be a real find and not someones pipe dream.

Tranny will prove nothing, only that it DID or DID NOT come with the engine block.
and they DID make 440-6 Automatic cars too!!!

1972 440-6 cars DO exist. There have been several threads about them here over the years.

For the original poster, note the VIN number on the block you are looking at for sure & post it here please?

Its not a REAL 72 Road Runner with the 6pack just a car that is suppose to have a 6pack on it and be a real P.O.S. too!

Who knows what Im going to find but hey, when someone tells you of somthing you gotta check it out!

Also remember, only 1970 had the pistons with valve reliefs. All other years got the regular 440 pistons. So what if the guy's wrong by one year? If the intake is gone, no way to tell if it was a 6 pack or a 440-hp originally.

The only way to know if the engine is a REAL Six Pack engine is to verify the VIN matches a REAL Six Pack car. There are no markings/casting #'s/stampings that are exclusive to Six Pack engines. Parts... yes.

becareful , those hawking HP2 blocks as 6pk blocks for big money aren't going to like that.

to the OP if the engine is UNMOLESTED there is a way to determine that is COULD be an original 6pk engine , but you would have to partially disassemble it to find out , if it's already apart and the guy doesn't have a valid REAL title to the original car all bets are off .

Take pictures of every stamping on the block you can (not just the casting numbers) there should be several and they aren't very big or easy to see
