wondering if the head liner in a 74 Duster can be painted and how does it look after painting? has anyone painted a head liner ? it is not cloth it is like some kind of vinal maybe. it is in great condition but I am looking to change the color of the interior from blue to black.

I recovered mine with spray adhesive and felt. It doesn't look original, but it looks very clean and highly acceptable to me.

I'm sure you could do the same thing with black vinyl if you need an original look.

The headliners from 1972-76 were a fibrous type cardboard with a thin skin/covering facing the interior. It does flake away over time, making it difficult to match the texture. I've painted them before using Vinyl paint in a spray can. It is a low risk area unlike the door or kick panels that get bumped and scratched often.
