Is there anyone out there having experience of building a low rev sb stroker?
I need a new engine for my 70 cuda vert and I have started thinking of how nice it would be having a LA 408 built for low end power. 360 blocks are very cheap and the stroker kits are available from many sources. I want an engine producing power from idle, giving maximum hp output at say around 4500 rpm.
An engine like that should not need expensive parts like alu heads and exotic valve train, rods and pistons. It should probably be easy on gas too and be able to work with something like 2.76 in the rear.
Let me hear your opinions folks!

If your using a stock type head you'll only have a grunt engine. I'd shoot for peak hp 5200-5500rpm and you will have more bottom end than street tires can handle. Magnum heads(or aftermarket replacements),9-10to 1 comp, for a camshaft PM me or call Tim @ Bullet cams(you could have a stock hyd roller reground for this combo),performer rpm manifold,650 holley, headers and you'd have a stump puller.

I had Jeff Patterson built me a 406 stroker based on what goldmember said.
It has a 800 edelbrock carb and a mild .484 lift MP roller cam and magnum heads.

It is in a 68 Charger with A/C, Power steering, 2.94 gears ran a 13.26 and I only took it to the track once. I think it has a high 12 in it.

It is more or less my wifes car so it had to be mild. It runs nice and smooth plus starts easy.

Jeff Patterson built my engine and is a member here.

Pm me for more info.

Sounds like a nice combo. Do you have any idea of gas mileage?

I never checked the mileage but if I had to guess it would be about the low to mid teens. Depending on how much highway driving I did.

There are a couple of articles in the tech archives on the subject. http://www.moparts.org/Tech/Archive/smallblock.html

I did a 427 inch SB a couple of years ago that was built for torque rather than peak power. We wanted an engine that had a torque curve like a Viper and that was what we ended up with.

427 cubic inches in a resto 340 block with CNC ported Edelbrock heads and a roller cam. It went into a '68 Valiant and it scares the pee out of me when I ride in it. That car goes 155+ mph at Portland International down the front straight. That is a little too fast in a 40 year old car!

You going to run drag radials? nothing worse than building a torque monster that wont hook and cant beat a new v6 stang or challenger light to light

Andy:

Your article was posted here a couple of weeks ago and I had a look at it. Have a question: Was the Valiant ever run back to back against a Viper?

To the OP: BPE should be able to set you up with a 4.25 crank that'll up the torque even more. The cubic inches can get to 440.

John, 20 MPG on the highway should be achievable with that motor. The intake duration is only 216 degrees.

The trick is to dial in the low speed A/F ratio and keep the cruise speed reasonable. Drag is proportional to speed squared so going from 60 to 75MPH increases wind drag 56%.

Jeff, I really never checked the mph plus I really haven't fine tuned the edlebrock. Fine tuning it would have required me to buy rods and jets that the tuneup kit didn't provide. So I got it as close as I could. So it is running a bit rich which I think helps me on the hot days.

I'll have to e-mail so pics of my progress on the Coronet.

Maybe I havent been clear enough. I dont want to put in a lot of money in this engine, and therefore I'm not looking for lots of power. But still enough power to have snappy response and lots of power handy for passings or just for fun.
Upon that I want to do it inexpensive!
360 block
stroker kit from Scat, Ohio Crank or ..?
Magnum heads?
Intake? Maybe the 1970 340 cast # 3462848 that I have?
Carb? The original 4 bbl Carter I have on that intake, or maybe a vacuum 650?
Cam?
Cast iron manifolds
2 1/4" full exhaust

A cam with 208/216@ .050 and aroud .470-.480 lift will have good maners. An Edelbrock thunder or a 650 Holley vac secondary will work great. If you have at least 3.23 gears you should be happy. The smallest Lunati or Summit will work fine. Tighter LSA on the cam will help torque. These things will make it a snappy driver to around 5000 RPM

I would not spend the money on the stroker kit if your going to use stock intake, carb, exh manifolds and 2 1/4". i would build a strong 360 in the 375hp range, stock crank and rods will do fine, with a cam in the low 220's at .050 range, and shoot for good CR like 9.75 to 10.2. my 360 in a heavy demon with about 400 hp pulled a 1.66 60' with 26" slicks, just a 3.91. but with a good converter. spend the money you save with the stroker on a better converter.

70 cuda 'vert, presumably for cruising as he's not interested in above 4500 RPM. He doesn't want 3.91s and a converter, he wants a 408 with 2.76 gears...

Build the 408, stick on EngineQuest or Hughes IronRams to get non-cracking seats and offset refurb costs (get ones with the LA intake pattern), put on an OEM spreadbore intake and that well-tuned Thermoquad that people always talk about. You won't have the max potential of that combo but it'll give you more grunt than a higher-HP tweaked 360.

Did i say get 3.91 gears ? i would get a good quality converter & hd 727 if he does build a hi torque stroker. Seen more than a few strokers eat those up in short order.
