Nobody makes the 1970-1971 thumbwheel style, so your only option is to buy a core and have the new board installed .180 watts with RCA jacks.
I may slam one together latter from my parts radio stash and put it up for sale, but right now don't really have time. Still have about 35-40 customer radios waiting on the shelf , including 8 conversions .
If you want to go with a '71 AM core , that's no problem, I have plenty. Going with a 70-71 thumbwheel AM FM core is a bit more expensive.
If you send me a core , I can hook you up @ $ 419 .

When did they change from thumbwheel to knob design for the Am-Fm stereo? Was it at the end of the 71 model year?

Yep , 1972-74 E body AM FMs are knob style.
1970 E body AM FM was a thumbwheel Phillips # 2884658.
1971 E body AM FM was a thumbwheel Motorola # 3501050 and has a cassette lead.

How much would you expect to pay for a 70 or 71 core?

Thanks,
Donald

You can usually find 70-71 cores in the $ 400 range , sometimes less.

I ended up going with this one to fill the space

http://www.vintagecarradio.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=20_35&products_id=123

the guy was nice to deal with. He said he would try to get it to me in 4 weeks and knocked a little off the price. Hopefully he will deliver.

geez, at these prices, I'd put a stock AM radio in to fill the hole, wire in a USB adapter to charge it, and pick up a Sandisk Sansa MP3 player like these

sansa fuze

sansa fuze video

and just have it setting in the ashtray....hook it to an amp with a 3mm stereo plug to RCA jack cord to power the speakers...

the sansa has an FM receiver in it to listen to the radio, and a slot for SD cards to expand the capacity beyond it's built in 4gb....
