Hi everyone...looks like I made a error somewhere along the line....here's the lowdown...fresh 68 340, went to fire it up, runs ok I guess however when I hooked up the timing light on #1 cyl I don't see the time mark anywhere on the balancer. It is howerver visible when I hooked it up to #6 wire. But it indicates around 40degrees after tdc!!!oh man!! What did I do wrong?

Thanks for any help!

It should read the same on 1 and 6. Maybe it's a bit advanced. Alot.

Does it have the right year timing cover and harmonic balancer? Some balacers are made to read on the passenger side of the block some are meant to read on the driver side. So if you have timing marks on the pass side and the balancer is made for the driver side or visa versa you will have to make a line on the balancer that corresponds with the timing marks on the timing cover.

No dial back light...just a standard one.

I cant see any indications at all when on the #1 wire.

Ya my timing cover has the indications on the drivers side.... i tried to retard the timing by moving the distributor and the car nearly died as it approached 25-30 ish......Im aiming for approx 8 degrees correct?

I'd put the timing marks on 10BTDC #1 compression and the magnet dead even with the tooth and #1 plug wire over the rotor.

what distributor and box if you have one?

MP dist and MSD box perhaps? Check to see if the wires are criss crossed coming out of the distributor. May need to reverse them, seen some wacky things in the past with that set up.

As mentioned, bring it to TDC #1 firing and start over Lining everything up, rotor with #1 wire cap tower.

when aligning the dist with #1 cyl...should i set my balancer on "0" or 10BTDC compression stroke?

I also pulled the #1 plug and verified the piston was at TDC and the balancer lines up with the 0 mark on the timing cover.

Update!

Ok, i just re-looked over my setup. plug wires were ok, i set my balancer to 10BTDC and took off the dist cap and lined up the reluctor to the magnet and ensured the rotor was at the #1wire. fired her up and there it was! with the timing light i saw the mark at approx 10BTDC at idle. when I advance the throttle to around 3000rpm the timing mark dissapears under the water pump pulley.
Which leads to my next question....how do you set advanced timing in this case?

Thanks for everyones help so far

at 3000 rpm the ...you want to look for about 35 degree BTDC...as the rpm goes ..there is more advance in the distributor

Mark the balancer so you can see 15 and 30 degrees BTDC and you can use the marks on your timing cover to make up the difference.

You need to find the total timing number the engine wants. Rev it up until it stops advancing. Find the initial number so it idles best and doesn't kick back on the starter.
