I recently changed the front (9 inch) drums and shoes on my '71 Dart.
Adjusting drums is something I have never been good at.
Anyway, the car now has a terrible pull to the left whenever I step lightly on the brakes. If I hit them hard, there is no pull.
It happens only during slow deceleration. If I'm not hanging onto tightly to the wheel when I touch the brakes, it will spin out of my hand.
When I try to adjust the brakes, the wheels will barely spin the forward direction. However, they freewheel whenever I spin them backwards.
All the hardware is in good shape and in place.
Can anybody help?

Thanks.

sounds like that one is too tight, back it off some

tighten the oppisite side till the pull is gone

are u sure the adjuster is in the right way and not tighting the one side up as u use the brake

I hate self adjuster

the shoes have a front and rear shoe also, the longer pad goes to the back side of the drum on both sides

u prob know this already

played with my 9" drums all the time, takes a little play to get them kinda even

I allway shoot for the rear brakes to grab the most and help the front stop....(9s are horse and buggy brakes)

the old brake machine at the inspection garage is the way to get them perfect, you can see how much each tire grabs when u slam the brakes on the rack...old skool for old skool cars

Did you have the drums turned ?
Make sure you put the long shoe towards the rear.

Did you replace the wheel cylinders ?
Could be a wheel cyl. sticking a bit.

I put new drums on. What's weird is that the car had a bad pull to the right before I did the work.
But, when I took the driver side apart, I noticed the self adjuster on the left was not even hooked up.
I didn't replace the wheel cylinders. They aren't leaking so I thought it best to leave well enough alone.

Spoon them out until they are locked solid then back them off until you get to a point as you spin the wheel forward at one place in the revolution there is a slight bit of contact that you can HEAR but not FEEL. Hit the brakes & recheck as mentioned 9" are finicky. If you cannot achieve the above ie it's tight one way & Ok the other then something is hanging up inside. Check that the (6) contact points on the backing plate are not excessively grooved & sandpaper or file them until they are & anything else that doesn't look right.

A better idea trash them and install discs.Cheap and you wont ever use drums again.I fought lomg and hard not to change the 65.If I knew how well they would work Id have done it 15 years ago.Rocky
