What is the best way to remove the heater hose pipe from the water pump housing without damaging the pipe? I want to remove the alternator bracket on my A38 Monaco to clean everything up and one of the bolts sits right behind one of the pipes.

Thanks

A heavy thick flat washer makes a good "key" for the slots in the pipe. A thick washer for a 3/4" or 1" bolt should be about right. You can turn the washer directly with a long screwdriver or weld a bolt on the top so you can use a socket.

They can be pretty hard to get out if they have been in there for a while... I would start that project when you don't need the car for a few days in case you do damage the pipe and need to get a new one.

Get a piece of sheet metal, as close to the thickness of the slots as possible. Put a crescent wrench on it and your done.
I've also used the metal ruler from a square with success.

It's been a while, but I just used to turn the bolt out, it sort of acted as a puller for the housing, take things off as an assembly, clean things up, re-assemble the reverse, no need to remove nipple.
Probably I am just lazy...OK, no probably about it...

It takes gasoline to interest me.

Thanks. It's been in there since it was new so I know it's going to be a pita to get out.

Step 1. Buy new pipe
Step 2. Destroy old one trying to get it out.
Step 3. Install new pipe

I've never been able to get one out without destroying it...

I agree you will need heat.Ive never taken one out without using heat.Ive also pulled a bunch without taking the pipe out.Just get all the bolts out.Leave a long one in just as a support. Then just turn the one out behind the tube. Its slow but they will come out.The bolt and pump will just keep going foward.Rocky

I'm not taking the housing off, it doesn't leak. I'm taking the alternator bracket off and one of the bolts that holds it on is behind the pipe for the heater hose, so the bolt has to come out.

Going to try taking it today and see what happens....

I have had recent success latley with this method...hit it with PB blaster liquid penetrant a day or so ahead of time. Then find a socket or similar that just barely fits inside the hose nipple. Use a pipe wrench on the OD of the nipple. The socket inside will keep you from collapsing the nipple with the pipe wrench. You will want to put in a new nipple as the pipe wrench will put teeth marks in the original.

Excellent suggestion. I would also suggest when you replace the pipe you either teflon the threads or use a brass nipple instead.

Don't be the exception.

Shove a tapered pry bar or punch into the nipple hole to keep it from collapsing and then use a pipe wrench or big Vise-Grips to spin it out.

Internal pipe wrench? Kind of like an 'easy out' but pipe sized.
