No, more likely the U-joint going bad. ring-n-pinion's will start to whine, but you're not going to get any "slop" there without it just breaking first.

Check the u-joint.

That what I was thinking being they are original to the truck.. truck has 178,000 miles on it..going to crawl under it check them out this week.. thanks!!

I remember year ago there was a story on how to install u-joimt. It said if I remember correctly they said you need to clock the new joint by put the grease fitting facing the cab...is this true? or does it really matter?

it could clunk if there's an excessive amt of backlash between the r&p. Jack up the rear & rotate a wheel back/forth. Yes you want the ujoint to be compressing the zerk rather than trying to pull the tapped zerk fitting hole apart if that makes sense in how you would orient it on installation

you want either ear delivering the torque to be compressing the zerk. easier to visualize when you have it in hand
