The 71 charger is going to the body shop so gotvto strip the car down
the 440 is coming out to have compartment soda blasted
what would be easyier to inatal? with tranny/bellhousing left in? Or yank both out as unit install as a unit? or yank both as a unit install the 440 with bellhousing/clutch then later the 4 speed?

It all depends on what you are comfortable with and if you have help, to guide the whole thing in.
I do it by myself and always put the tranny in first. However I have only done automatics. Might be easier to install clutch and bell before and then just hoist up the 4 speed. My belief is less chance to scratch your new paint, with a shorter assembly..

With a 4-speed you have 2 options ... install as an assembly (my preferred method) OR install the engine and bell first then curse and swear as you try to install the tranny later.

I think a lot depends on your shop setup. Installing the tranny is certainly a lot easier if you have a hoist.

We just pulled the engine and trans from mine all as one unit. I used a screw type load leveler and it came out real easy.

^^^ Agreed. Automatics are so much easier.

whats wrong with putting it all in from the bottom?

Allen Here's a novel idea, let's not throw a bunch of parts at the car hoping it will fix the problem and instead spend a little time diagnosing it first. Life was a little easier when I was just a wrench.

For some reason I never concider that, but it's probably the best bet in this case.

As long as you're careful and cover everything, it shouldn't be a concern. The load leveler really is the key. I wouldn't attempt it without it.

So easy a caveman could do it, without scratching anything.....

Why send it to the soda blaster with the front suspension still hanging on it? I unbolted my k-frame, picked the car up with the cherry picker and put it up on jack stands real high. Then rolled the engine/trans/suspension out the front(was easy with the tires still on it). Took a couple of 2x4's, drilled some holes and bolted them onto the car where the k-frame bolted up originally and bolted some large casters to the 2x4's to make moving the car around easy. Makes working on everything so much easier when it's out.

Ralph here on angies comp.
Im taking to blaster cause car color is getting changed sence paying for the paint job by the hour
will be money ahead to pay the 100.00 hour for the soda blasting to have them do under the hood inside trunk and door jambs insted of paying the paint shop by the hour to sand all them areas
i think i will drop the 440in from top then install the 4 speed from under the car

I just did this in my GTX. The engine would be easier to install without the trans or bellhousing. I installed the clutch and pressure plate on the engine prior to install and it was a tight fit. If I had to do it again I would install the engine only then the rest from under the car. Best way(except from underneith) to avoid damaging the paint. Keep in mind this was done in my garage with no help. My trans was a PITA to get in from under the car though.

I put my bigblock (RB) and 727 in as a unit, by myself, in my freshly painted Dart. No scratches or engine leveller either. Make sure the rear of the car is as high as you can safely get it, and the front as low as you can get it.
Just helps with angles.
