I have an old push button relay I took off of my inner fender well years ago and found it digging through all my old stuff. I remember removing it as it never worked anyway due to the relay itself or crappy wiring I replaced, but is this a push button start? What is the purpose of having it under the hood? To be able to start the car while you are working on it? Sorry if it sounds like a dumb question. Is it worth putting back on?

I don't think any of these cars had a factory underhood starter button. so as to what the one you have is for, or what it does....you got me!

who knows what the previous owners of your car did.

could be a starter button to bump the starter while running the valves on a solid cam? if so, it'll just bump the starter over, it won't actually start the car and let it run. (unless you have the key in the "run" position, in which case, bumping the starter under the hood WILL make it run! )

Was that a 74 A body that you removed it from. I've seen em but not quite sure what it was maybe a seat belt interlock bypass

Yes it is a 74 A-body(Duster). I will have to take a pick of it and post it. Even the new engine bay harness has the connector on there for it.

I have that button on my '74 Charger...seems like it was something to do with a seatbelt/ignition reset button...don't remember for sure though...definately was not a starter button.

...in 1974, when all new cars and light trucks sold in the United States featured DOT-mandated interlocks that prevented engine starting unless driver and front-passenger belts were fastened.

Mine, while still on there, has been disconnected on my car...guess it just depends on how original you wish your car to be.

Good info but how did the thing function? Did you have to pop the hood and push the button to bypass the seat belt interlock?

Yes, if something went wrong in the seatbelt interlock system and prevented the engine from stating, the red button could be pushed to override the system and allow an engine start ONE TIME....it would then reset and you'd have to push it again for the next start.

The interlock box interrupted the yellow wire that energized the starter relay.

Those relays DO fail, too. A friend had a 74 Duster with that crappy system. He dang near pulled his last hair out trying to figure out why the car wouldn't start. I think that he ended up bypassing the relay and threw it as far as he could.
