or was it '66? Anyhoo, what years are they an exact swap fit. Found out that my 74 is beyond repair. My machinist found a hole in one of the cylinders and now I need a new donor. Mainly need to know how late I can go and still bolt it in as well as use same crank, etc.

Thanks

68 and you'll be good , the earlier engines may have had a smaller crank register where the converter snout pilots.

I have a 318LA out of a '67 Coronet with a '66 casting date on the block if you need a date coded block?

The L.A. 318 came out in the cars produced in the L.A. plant in 1966, the crankshafts in the 904 trans equipted cars have a smaller converter register than the ones with 727 The 318 blocks are the same until the Magnums came out, I think, as far as I know

You want the latest one that'll fit easily? Look for a 1986 Fifth Avenue, those engines are still wonderful inside after 100K granny-driven miles, I have one apart at my house right now.
The Mag 5.2 is still pretty much the same but will require some modifications. The late 318s with 2-barrel carbs and roller cams are the ones, bolt right in.
You'll swap over to your carb and ignition system, and use the water pump from your '67.

The new, LA type 318 was brought out in 1967; the main difference from the 273 was its larger 3.91” bore. There could be some confusion over the two 318 V8 engines, one using the old A type design, the other using the lightweight LA type. According to Mark Koskenmaki, all 1967 A-type 318s came from Canada, while vehicles built in the US had the new LA 318. The A-engines did not last past 1967.
Excerpt from http://www.allpar.com/mopar/318.html
In fact working on the line in a dealership some early 67 's still had the older version of the 318 in them.

Guys, read the original post! He's got a 1967 car and wants to know the NEWEST 318 that'll bolt in.
Even if it is a 318 Poly the LA 318 will bolt in and 1986 or 1987 is about the latest that I'm sure of.
If it has two bolts holding down the scalloped valve covers he'll use the original carb and distributor and water pump but not the intake manifold or exhaust manifolds.

newest LA is a '91...newest 318 that will bolt in is a 2001 or 2002 (whenever they were disco'd) if you swap your timing cover forward, get a cam snout extender, and a carbed magnum intake.

That is right - looking for a replacement - wanting a LA 318 to bolt is is that they start in 67 model year.

...except for the crank differnce in 904 equipped 67 LA's. (As far as I've understood, Polys never came with a 904?) So, it's pretty safe to say that a 318 from '68 & up car bolts in up until they went in to fuel injection in the late 80's.

hmmmm... I know for a fact that 318 B-bodies used a 727 in 1967...same with C-bodies. the A-bodies all seemed to get 273's with a 904... so tell me: WHAT chrysler rig used a 318/904 combo in 1967?? I say none.

A. He said his '74 is beyond repair (although it is not because for $100 he can get it sleeved).
2. " Mainly need to know how late I can go and still bolt it in as well as use same crank, etc."

So it doesn't matter what happened in 1966 or 1967. For a real bolt-in for a 1974 318 the 318 (not 360) engine is a must, but it has to stop at the 5.2 Magnum because changing the front of the motor or weighting on the torque converter/flywheel is going beyond a bolt-in. I think the break year is 1988. And if the OP's area is anything like Denver there must be a hundred Fifth Avenues waiting to donate their 318s.

mag 318's are neutral balanced like the LA's....

any used motor I'd be pulling the t-chain cover and replacing the chain anyway, so no big deal to swap covers...
