I'm getting ready to start the body and paint work on my 68 Sport Fury and I'm thinking about changing it from white to black (it has a red interior). Painting the door jams, hood and trunk doesn't bother me, but changing the engine bay color without pulling the engine is obviously a lot of work. I think it will have to be rattle canned because the car is a 383 with A/C and I don't think I will be able to get a gun in there to shoot it. Has anyone done this without pulling the drivetrain before? Got any tips? Also, how did you guys shoot the front of the door jams and rear of the front fenders... Did you remove the doors? Thanks

You could paint a car while it's still together, but the end result won't be as nice had you taken the time to do it right. Changing colors is going to make it that much harder since anyplace you can't get paint onto will stand out.

Don't expect rattle can paint to last very long compared to real automotive paint. Buy good paint and use a preval sprayer instead.

it can be done. will it look good long term? no.
first step most people forget is to completely wash the engine compartment.
then remove all of the easily removed hoses and other stuff like that. wrap the motor with plastic. wrap lines and wire looms with tinfoil. then spray away.

Hey Neil, what's a preval sprayer? I am doing this car to sell, but the reason I am thinking about changing colors is I think the car would look a LOT better in black/red than white/red. If it's not going to make a lot of difference in the car's value when it's done, I'm not going to do it. I'll just repaint it white. It has polished torquethrust II's on it with while letter T/A's, so I thought black paint would stand out better with those wheels. I know it would be a lot more work, so what do you guys think of the value of white versus black paint? Would I just be wasting my time changing colors?

We pulled the engine and radiator and other bolt on stuff, but used aluminum foil over other things we didn't want painted because it'll form tight to it. This was no resto, just a hot rod... Castrol Super Clean did great for cleaning the 40+ years of grunge under the hood!

Where did you get the Super Clean? Did you run it through your power washer? I have a cheapie power washer that's only 1300 pis... not sure if it will remove all the grunge. I'm not pulling the car apart to paint the engine pay a new color, if I can't do it together I'll leave it white. Thanks for responses guys.

In the last picture, you can see the stuff like the master cylinder wrapped in foil. Super clean I just picked up at the hardware store. Yes, we ran it full strength through a pressure washer, then used 3M painting scrubbies to finish cleaning and preping the old paint.

In this picture, the guy I bought my Charger from simply painted everything with red paint, engine included! Not the best way to do it, but it worked for him! I clearly am not leaving it that way, but it's good enough for right now.

You can see the overspray and lack of care in this pic. You can do a better job with patience.

In my opinion, you're not just wasting your time, your devaluing the car by performing a half baked color change. I'm not a fan of color changes even when they ARE done properly, but in this case it's a no-brainer IMO. It's not as though the car is a really undesireable color either; white is nice.

For me, the car would be worth more to me in white. (easier to keep clean and maintain). There is nothing wrong with a white car with red interior. Plus, the white is a lot more forgiving when it comes to hiding less than perfect body work. I would either sell it as is, or put it back to it's original color. Please don't do a half-a$$ed paint job that the new owner will regret owning within 5 years. Just my

This changing color topic brings up a question that may come to the mind of a purist, and forgive me if it has been expored before. Is it possible to change the color of a car and maintain matching numbers? I.e. Can you get new id plates to match what you have changed such as color, engine, etc? Is it possible, or even legal? Just curious. My Chally will stay Black!!

I would think a new fender tag (assuming the car does not have its buildsheet) and the color fraud has been sucessfully performed! Titles (at least in Wash State) state color, but they can be changed, and are SUPPOSED to be changed if the color changes so thats a non-issue.
Does make one wonder how many color-counterfeits are out there......

BUT----COMPLETELY removing all evidence of the original color is NOT an easy task!!!!

True. I was kinda thinking though, about a ground up body off resto including a blast job. Would it fool the judges? Or would it even matter if you had the proper tags to match? I understand they are looking for and know how to spot new vs. original paint. Just a curiosity question to toss around the local watering hole

Personally I feel you should paint it like our 67 Fury. We went from the boring factory "Biege" to a brighter hue, it was easy too, just hose off the dirt and hose on the paint, piece of cake! We might even have a gallon or two of this "Orgasm Orange" laying around the shop if you want some cheap. Look how well the orange highlights those breathtankingly beautiful C-body lines.

BTW, I agree with all the others who supported leaving your car white. Color changes are ALMOST always the wrong direction, and even for the few exceptions I'd support, you need to do it right because as mentioned, it's VERY hard to get 100% of the original paint off, even when you have it stripped to a bare shell. Nobody I know wants to buy a half baked color change car, they nearly always look like

*As far as judges and fender tags/faking/changing colors goes, it depends on the show you attend. Some do not include it in the judging criteria, others do. One thing is for sure, a knowledgable person can spot a fake tag, I haven't seen a perfect one yet so while you may fool some people some of the time with a fake, it will almost certainly get recognized by someone as a fake eventually, not to mention other clues that usually survive a color change which would lead to it's discovery.
