Should my volt meter be reading 12v when the car is off? Its an after market unit I put in my 68.

A fully charged 12V battery should put out about 12.5 volts.
If you have a voltmeter in the car it shouldn't read anything with the ignition switch off, it should only be powered with the switch on.

You have connected it wrong... The 12V should only be live when the key is ON.. Find another 12V source to connect to.. Just my $0.02..

I agree find a switched power source.They tell you to use switched power.It will drain the battery and the gauge might get hot as it will be on 24/7.Rocky

Burn up? No, but it'll put a constant draw on it that you don't want. Find a key switched source.
