..what's the best way to tell an 8 1/4 from a 7 1/4?
..i should probably know this but can't remember.

Didn't know they made and 8.25 TRANS ????

oops , he edited before I could hit the reply button ...

I think the 8 1/4 has 10 bolts on the cover , 7 1/4 has nine ... I bet you'd find the info in the TECH ARCHIVE in the time it took you to ask the question and my reply with an edit

7 1/4 uses 2 1/2" axle tubes,8 1/4" uses 3"

Just remember if you are looking at an 80s one 7 1/4 also has 10 bolt cover and bigger axle tubes but they get narrower at the housing.
