Has anyone measured the HP loss that comes with using the AAR style muffler system?

I was told once it cost upward of 20HP to feed the exhaust in and out of the same end of the Muffler?

Has anyone tested this?

I don't think they lose more than any other muffler would. T/A mufflers make a U inside where other mufflers would make a S. So in a way they are like a straight through design.

I resurrected this thread because I found some interesting info on the original AAR /TA muffler design ...and got onto a performance replacement,.

Not for the resto crowd, but any FAST racers running either of these Mopars may be interested.......

Firstly, a reply to an email I sent:

WOW Mal - I wrote that a long time ago - I'm surprised you recalled this.

The systems on the AAR's & T/A's were dual 2.25" - I own an AAR, though it is not ready for the road yet - still under a tedious restoration.

The OE mufflers (reverse flows) are just a poor internal design so they flow like crap. We flow tested one of them when I worked for Dynomax, that's where I got the 156 CFM flow #'s from.

Compared to a Dynomax # 17675, which has a flow rate of 517 sCFM. I would not hesitate to run this Super Turbo on your car, as it has a VERY good flow rate. The 2.5" version of this same reverse-flow muffler is part # 17676 (the 17675 is a 2.25" in/out) & the 2.5" version has a flow rate of 539 sCFM.

These are a standard oval size (4.25" thick x 9.75" wide), x 14" long bodies, so they are shorter than the OE AAR/T/A mufflers by 6".

Hope someone finds this useful info -

A member mentioned on here a few years ago in a thread about T/A exhaust, that there is also a muffler used on the Mustang Cobras that were in/out on the same side. Don't recall any flow numbers.

Does this ring any bells?

Often thought of asking whoever makes the T/A exhaust system to make 3" available and without the deflectors in the tips...........

I think they rust quickly because the gas we use and we start em up and shut em off.

2 aspects caused them to rust out easy... the gases
plow into the wall and if you run short times it never
dries up the moisture... once the aluminized coating
burns off it rusts easy
