I was crawling under my car last night and noticed that the dipstick tube (its a 440) is not all the way seated. The part of the tube that's the oversized metal ring, which looks like it should butt against the block, looks to be more than 1/2" from being against the block.

Should the tube be fully in the block to the point of butting against that oversized ring around the tube?

And I noticed the tube is resting against the steering box. I don't remember how far the tube was in when I installed it but I'm thinking the steering box interference could have wiggled it out.

use a 3/8" wrench slid over just above the bulge to give you a point to tap with a hammer.... Actually I have someone hold the wrench in place from below then I use a long extension as a punch from above...

Thanks, something to try next time. I was able to reach the bulge with a long screwdriver and tap it into place.

Unfortunately I removed the tab that bolted it to the side of the motor mount, I guess it didn't fit or was in the way. I'm thinking of bolting some metal to the mount then tack welding it to the tube to keep it from coming back up. I'm pretty sure when driving, it's pushing against the side of the steering box and wiggling it up and out.
