Hey all,

I have a chrome steel wheel that is going on my '85 shortbed. It was originally off my '95 Van and it had a locked caliper. So the brake dust is really caked on bad. I got it to shine a little better but there are a lot of areas that are grey.

Tried rag and water and then some brake cleaner. Didnt help. So what can I use to clean this wheel? I got the back ones looking great because they were dust free but I cant get this one clean.

Ideas? Tips?

I've found the wheel cleaner spray + elbow grease to be pretty effective on brake dust.

Not sure what the finish is like on your wheel but I have used heavy duty toilet bowl cleaner in the past with very good results.May be overkill for your application though,some of them have about a 20% base of hydrochloric acid which eats through just about anything,maybe even the wheel itself if left on long enough.

Use gloves,wipe it on and be sure to rinse thoroughly...has worked well for me.Better to test a spot first,if you have dull gray areas it sounds like the chrome itself may have a problem.

mothers mag wheel polish should work along with a lot of rubbing

SOS pad. Been using them for years on chrome wheels. Cleans them up real good, and easy too.
Does not harm the chrome finish at all. Try it on a very small section first if you are worried about damaging the wheel.
