i bought a rubber one last year put in my 440 and now i saw a some oil. under my one buddy told me just go back to a cork style

I think your Buddy means "rope style"...IMHO, it's how the seal journal on the crank is finished, if it's smooth, rubber, if it has serations/knurling finish, rope....if your installing rubber, offset the install, so the the mating edges are not flush with the parting line of the cap, have it so that each cut edge protrudes into the opposing journal ends of the parting line,...if your using rope, then ya, you have to flush the seal ends to the parting lines of the crank/block journal, and the rear seal cap

I can tell you WHICH rear main seal has worked for me. The "rubber" one is actually neoprene and if installed correctly on a properly machined crankshaft, it seals well. The above response is good advice. SOME of the leaks that occur from this area come from the SIDE seals of the aluminum retainer. I have tried the cork on the sides, the fiberous inserts and then I've even tried squirting RTV in there in some cases. The RTV works best for me, but the only way to get it right is with the engine UPside down on a stand.

im planning on changing mine with the engine in the car.Thinking im going to try the old cork style thanks for the advice. I'm planning on taking my car to the iola old car show the feature car is plymouth.
