from what i gather a power steering box will have to be installed, steering column and pump/hoses

what other years/models of cars would make good donors?

any pointers/pics would be greatly appreciated

i have the steering box already

OOPS It's on a '70 challenger

You basically have it right. Any E-body PS column (with shift lever or not to match your needs), PS coupler body (usually supplied with column), pump / brackets / hoses / pulleys.

Actually you may not need a new column. I googled swapping from power to manual in our '71 Charger and found out that power and manual used the same center shaft. It is collapsible and has 2 sets of holes (one at manual depth and one at power depth) filled with plastic pins. I had to disassemble our column and soak it in penetrating oil to get it to slide out. In your case, you can tap on the end of the shaft (without the coupler on it and with a rubber mallet or the eqiuvalent) and drive it in to the desired depth. From what I read, the plastic pins were to keep it from rattling. It probably won't be an issue if it has light surface rust like ours did. All you need then is the p/s coupler.

Plastic pins are also there so that the shaft is collapsible in case of a collision, otherwise it will impale the driver.

i've been searching the net and have seen adapters for changing from power to manual steering but it seems to change manual to ps the column has to be changed........I wish I knew for sure cause I have found most brackets,pump/pullies available through jegs, year one and others........also i haven't found out if the ps pump is the same on all big blocks?

The coupler is different. Shaft may or may not be different. I just finished converting to manual and rebuilding my column. I learned that for a 70 B body there are 2 different length outer(lower) steering shafts. My shaft has 2 holes that were drilled and pinned, I always assumed one hole was for a power setup and the other for manual but that;s not the case. You could shorten your shaft and drill new holes and pin, still need a new coupler though. I found nylon small diameter screws at valu that I used to repin the shaft. I have pics in my post if you search under my username.

Any pump and its bracketry from a similar vintage big block should work. I took the pump out of my 383-4spd `68 Road Runner and put it into a `71 Challenger 440-auto car and everything bolted up fine. The only hiccup was one of the PS lines had a funky bend in it. Therefore, I had to replace one hose with one designed for an E-body.

The PS shaft is approximately 4" shorter than a manual's and I wouldn't recommend defeating the built-in crash tolerance by disabling that feature. Get the correct length shaft for a PS column and it install it in your column.

you can shorten your shaft and retain the ability to collapse in an accident. Use nylon screws in the holes and it will still function as intended.

How would you go about shortening the shaft? Cut & weld? That would be the safest way, wouldn't it?

Just cut it. I switched to a Firm Feel universal coupler that required me to shorten the shaft a couple of inches. No proplem. I woul not weld on the shaft. Welds break.
