Hi all. Does the fan motor on my 74 Dart come out from the engine compartment side. The way the motor and flange is bolted to the firewall makes it look like it I could just take the nuts off and slide it right out. It looks and sounds too easy but thought I would ask. If it does come out this way is there anything I should be cautious of or any tips?

Thanks everyone!:)

I'm fairly sure your 74 is the same as my 69. It comes out from the inside with the entire heater box assembly. Undo the 4 nuts around the blower motor and the retaining plate where the heater hoses connect to the firewall. Then open the passenger side vent door and undo the j-bolt located inside.

Once all that is done gently work it out enough to undo the heater cables and electrical connections and it should come out(mine is a non-ac car, the ac cars are a bit more complicated). Mines out currently restoring the box and replacing the core, motor and seals. Good luck!

I beleive that if you just take the four nuts loose on the firewall the motor should just come right out. At least that's how I remember my 74 scamp blower motor coming out and that is the way my 74 D100 truck motor comes out. There is some sealer between the flange and the firewall so you may have to gently pry it out some.

Thanks Joey. Are the J-bolts you refer to used to hold the whole unit in under the dash? Is it hard to find all of them or is obvious where they are located?

Thanks Richard. I saw the gasket or sealer around the flange and will try to save it. I have had two responses with different thoughts so I think I will just tear into it and see what happens. I hope your experience will be the same for my car.

Thanks so much...

Just looked at the repair manual and it does remove from the engine compartment. No need to take the interior heater out.

My 69 service manual states in the blower motor removal section...
1-Remove heater as outlined in "Heater Removal".

But the 74 may be different I have never owned one. The J-bolt is obvious, just open the door and look inside. The bolt head is on the bottom of the box. I would undo this one last.

edit: just saw Stumpy's last post, try that route first, good luck!

Thanks again Joey. I am going to give it a try from the engine compartment...fingers are crossed, and yes I know it's harder to work with your fingers crossed. JK!

Richard, not only did I read it but saved a copy! I'm old and forget very easy:) I hope you didn't take that out of your manual just to make a copy:/ It sounds very straight forward and just as I had hoped.

Thanks again for your valuable time...
Russ:)

I have had the manual a long time and worn it smooth out. The pages are now a loose leaf style in a lot of cases.
