OK so after finding crud in the pick up tube in the 360 I built, I have decided to tear it down..... Gonna take it down to bare block and build from scratch, so I need ideas for combos. The motor will be going into my 72 d100 so I want torque, but a good highway cruiser with decent gas mileage was thinking: PISTONS: KB flat CAM: lunatti 90360 INTAKE: Edelbrock 2176 intake summit brand headers I'm going to use Clevite 77 bearings, and a cloyes double roller timing chain. I already have a Melling HV oil pump. I need advece for the valve springs, connecting rods, etc (anything I'm forgetting.) OR if you have a budget minded build, or a build you already did (I'm trying to build a good engine for under $1000) please let me hear it. I want to be able to pull or carry weight without being bogged down like the 318. BUT I also NEED to get decent mileage unloaded. I'm hoping for VERY high teens or low 20's. 400 HP would be NICE thanks for the help after post thought: Do the "302" heads flow as well as the stock 360 heads?? there are a few newer mopars in the pick a part by me that I could check for them, but what would they have came on originally?? Would the swap be worth it??

I'd go find a Magnum & start from there. I put a stock 5.9 in my 77 Crew with a 518 & averaged a little over 18 almost 19 on the HWY with plenty of power.
Because I JUST bought this motor. Hoping to have just done a cheapo rebuild. But after finding metal and material, might as well find where it's origin is. Just wanted an idea of parts to put into this motor that are cheapish and can hop it up a bit.

302 heads flow like 318 heads...the better and smaller chamber will give a compression boost, but limit you to about 250-275hp....
if you heads are in good shape, I'd run them...if they need any work, I'd probably junk them and buy some enginequest 318B's from hughes, and some OEM magnum rockers.
cam, I'd go lunati voodoo 60400 or 60401. if the engine needs to be bored, KB107's are a no-brainer.
intake, a stock 360 flows as good or better than an eddie performer. if you're looking for mileage, I'd go stock 360 intake and a t-quad.
If you hadn't just bought this motor, I would go find a running magnum 360, get the cam reground, rering/bearing/tchain and edelbrock magnum air gap intake and call it good. if it needed to be rebored, toss some KB107's in there....

Well not to burst your bubble but going off new prices what you have there will eat up about $600 of your $1000 budget just on pistons, intake and cam, leaving you not much for machine work, timing chain, gaskets, rings, bearings, and any other little things you may need. Now if you can find that stuff used and on the cheap you may be able to do it for your specified budget. If not, which depending on your time constraints may limit how long you have to search, you may be looking at a re-ring and bearing shortblock, do a little port work if you can, pick up a cam like the Comp 268h or similiar and a double roller chain, and maybe spring for a 340 intake and/or some headers.

$1000 budget? That won't go far when factoring in machine work and new parts. Bide your time and find a low mileage Magnum 360. Toss new gaskets in it, a 4bbl intake and carb. You'll have 300HP without having to mess with anything else.

Any thoughts on the Eddie 2177 cam??? It was reccomended to me because of the low end/mid range torque. I'm going to keep the stock intake, and run the Qjet while the Tquad rebuilt. Just bought the cloyes true double roller. Still need to get clevite con rod bearings. So far parts list I have: Melting HV oil pump Cloyes double roller Gasket sets (intake and timing) Need to get the valve springs, con rod bearings, oil pan gasket, exhaust gaskets. I am not going to go with the 302 heads then. I'll probably end up pulling the heads then and sending them off for freshening. MAN this $350 motor is adding up QUICK

Cheapest magnum 360 around here is $750 and that's HIGH mileage ones. There's one on Clist for $500 but it just doesn't look right if you know what I mean.

KB107 pistons are too much compression for a truck motor. Speed Pro H405P's are better suited to a truck motor, as they have around 8.5-1 compression. A cam that is no bigger than 216 @ .050 will make good torque. Don't go with too big of tubes on the headers. 1 5/8 is plenty big enough. I've never had much luck with Cloyes chains. By the time you get the cam broke in, it will be stretched. I use Edelbrock chains, and they hang in there! Use the recommended springs for whatever cam you choose. If your heads have the air bleed holes under the exhaust ports, be sure to tap them and screw in some allen head pipe plugs before you install your headers, or you will have an exhaust leak from hell. Good luck.

Forget the 400 HP. You want 400+ ft/lbs of torque down in the useable RPM band.
What is the cylinder head volume so I can figure cmpression ratio? Knowing the transmission, stall, gear and tire size would also help.
Back in the 1980's My first 360 had flat top pistons (about 9.0:1), stock heads with stock valves, but the bowls opened up and gasket matched, and used the Crower Baja Torque Master cam, 208 duration @ 0.050, 0.427" lift. Holley street dominator, Holley 600, and headers. It ran pretty good in my '73 Sno-Fighter W100. I built another 360 (about 9.5:1 compression) using an older Hughes 209 @ 0.050" cam, 2.02" heads from Aerohead that I ported (bowls, gasket match, pushrod pinch area.) and it too ran good, but I wanted a bit more top end so I used The Hughes 215/223 @ 0.050" cam. This cam makes some power. This used the Edelbrock Performer with the ports gasket matched to the 360 port size, Holley 670 truck avenger carb, and headers. I used a stock (rebuilt) hi-stall converter (around 2,000RPM?) This was in my '84 RamCharger.
I like the 208 @ 0.050" duration cams with mild RV type 360's The Lunati 60400LK 208/213 @ 0.050", 0.454"/0.454" lift would be my the easy first choice cam for low to mid range torque, and fuel mileage.
When I looked at summits cam selection, this Howards cam popup up "CL711381-10" That has huge lift numbers? I wonder if it is a misprint? http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HRS-CL711381-10/
This Howards cam could be interesting if the lift numbers are correct? The high rate of lift should make alot of torque, but I would think you would need to make sure to add ZDDP to every oil change and use the correct springs to prevent lobe wear?
The Hughes HEH1019AL cam would also be good, but it would cost about $100 more than the Lunati cam.
If you want more mid to upper range power, and have 9.5+ compression, the 2200+ stall converter, and some head porting work the Lunati 60401LK or Hughes HEH1523AL cams should make more upper end power without much loss to the low end torque.

Not sure on Head volume. Whatever stock 79 360 heads are. Trans is a745 running 30's
