Hey guys, I'm new here. My name is Jake. I'm a big time mopar guy, and I'm having some trouble with my 5th. I've been told the swap for a 4bbl is fairly simple, but I would like to know if anyone has done it before and what exactly it entails. I already have the crappy 2bbl and intake off, and I swapped those for an aluminum edelbrock performer 318/360 intake, and carb. And well I was at it I went ahead and tossed on a set of chrome valve covers ... I have a surplus of parts for these smallblocks I've been collecting over the yaers with all my rams and what not, I even have the mopar performance ignition kit, however, I do not know exactly how to hook it up. My questions are, where do I start with this ignition kit, and is it wise to remove all the egr crap while I rid of the lean burn? Any help would be appreciated, I have all the wiring diagrams, and instructions from the kit itself, but I would rather have somebody who's completed the swap before throw me a bone. Thanks, Jake

Welcome and here's a wiring diagram for the ingnition . It is in the tech archives section (link above the www.moparts banner at top of the web page) that has a lot of good info on Mopes. http://www.moparts.org/Tech/Archive/elec/3.html
Thanks for the replys guys I thought this was gonna be a horror show trying to figure this out. So I'll get a carb spacer, and keep the egr system for now (360 4bbl in the works). I'm still confused about the wiring though, I have the "orange box" kit, including the vaccuum advance distributor (which is in place) and now I need a new ballast resistor? In the instructions it said leave the old one alone, is there an old one? Haha I have no idea what I'm doing here, and unfortunetly you guys are gonna have to walk me through this as I'm currently on feb vaca and would like my car running by school next week... I just got sick of the finiky idle, and the constant sputtering of this stupid computer these cars have, and thats why I was requesting info from anyone who's done a similar swap with the ignition... Thanks again

kick down linkage is different too, unless you convert to 4 speed like I did with my 87 Diplomat you will need the find the 4bbl kickdown stuff.
They say there are no such thing as a stupid question. They say there is always the exception that proves the rule. Don't be the exception.

Welcome Jake! You can use a Bouchillion trans kickdown cable kit along with their throttle cable bracket. When you go 4bbl It makes everything sooo much cleaner & functional
Here's a pic

Nice lookin 5th Ave!
I'd keep the EGR, it will often improve fuel economy a little bit. (It reduces pumping losses, and allows extra ignition advance) It has virtually NO effect on power at full throttle. (No intake manifold vaccuum means no exhaust is being sucked into the intake)
Yup. EGR gets a bad rap (mainly, I guess, from leaky valves and the earlier "floor jet" setups). But if you know what you're doing, there's definitely efficiency lurking there.
Ditto lots of vacuum advance. Lots.

You are looking at it the wrong way, EGR NEEDS more vaccume advance not allows it. It slows down the burn so you have to light it earlier and less of it burns in the chamber and more burns in the exhaust. That is the result of a slow burn. It INCREASES pumping losses because you are now pumping another gas through there that is doing nothing but reduceing power witch in turn requires higher throttle opening witch means even more gasses in pumping through the engine. It is desighned to reduce combustion chamber temperature for emmision controls (NOX). A lower temp also means lower preasure and the lower preasure means less TQ witch also means higher throttle angle and still more gasses being pumped through the engine reduceing efficency further. Don't think for a minute those EGR valves would still be there if emmisons regulations went away
I did a simple experiment to see how much differance it made in the real world. I hooked up my scanner and made sure the EGR valve was working properly on my caravan with a 3.0 I went out and set the cruise at several speeds where the EGR valve was opening, came back to the shop, disabled it and went out and repeated the tests watching MAP and TPS and vaccume was up and TPS was down as well as injector pulse width at every speed where the EGR valve was opening. I did the exact same test on my 2000 Cirrus with a 2.4 and got results very similar. MPG over several tanks of both of my cars improved when I dissabled the EGR valves. I always fill the cars the same (till the fuel will not go any farther down the neck) at the same pump at the same station.
I am not causing global warming, I am just trying to hold off a impending Ice Age!
