Hi, I want to run a Voodoo cam with 513" lift(hyd.), can I use my stock 452 heads with this(.40 head gasket), or do I need to do some machine work? The motor is a '67 440 with 30 over and flat top pistons.
Any thoughts
Thanks
Jim

hi
you have opened a can of worms !!!

what is the piston to deck heigth ?

you will need srings to match the cam lift !

you will need to cut valve guides down app .125"

why run a .040" thick gasket? .020" steel should work and save some compression ?

piston to alve clearance must be checked !

Without getting into all that block height/clay the pistons stuff, I built a 426 wedge 6 years ago using the stock 10.5 to 1 flat top pistons, the Voodoo 513" lift cam, Crane springs. Stock gaskets, I don't remember the thickness. I didn't clay anything, just spun the motor over. The engine has over 6k on it now and still screams. I know everything should be checked, but I was told the cam was ok with stock pistons and my block had never been decked. The cam pulls great from idle to about 5200 rpm, which is pretty much where my motor is about done making power. I have stock 906 heads with a little port clean up, Edlebrock RPM intake, ceramic headers, and a 800DP Holley. Never had any clearance issues. I'm running an 833 OD and 3:91 gears. The car (64 Polara) gets sideways easily in 1st gear and sometimes 2nd, too, and cruises 65 at about 2200 rpm.

A better question would be is it the right cam? If you have say un-poprted heads, stock bottom end (9:1) no headers, no stall, stock intake, 3.23's I'd say it would not be a good cam choice in any event.

Thanks so far. The car will be running a tunnel ram with 2 600's, 1 7/8" fender well headers, 24-2800 stall and 4.10 or 4.30 gears, 29-31" tires. This car is basically just for show, sorry guys, no real racing with this one. The heads have 509" springs already on them.

For an intake like that I'd have more stall and better flowing heads for sure.

If you just want to actually drive it around with the tunnel ram and aren't concerned with off-the-line bogs or real performance it might work.

I'm no engine expert, more of a for those who are

Don't be afraid of a tunnel ram. Mine is as snappy at part throttle as ANY manifold I've ever run. It makes more torque and power than any other manifold out there. Just dial in the carbs like you would on ANY manifold. The fuel mileage may even suprise you too. Dave

T-ram should be fine although it might like a little more stall.
