What would be the best method to cleanup the inner roof and structure of a 69 b-body? Looking for sanding, cleaning, and preferred paint/treatment methods.

Thanks in advance...

Blasting would be my preference, but if you are only working on that area and don't want to deal with the mess blasting creates, wirebrush and sanding are about the only other methods . When done, get epoxy or Rust Bullet on that ASAP.

I have used a wire wheel on a grinder for the structural braces, scraped the sheet metal inner roof with a wide razor to get all the glue off. Would you use a DA for sanding? What grit? Very light surface rust remaining.

Also why do you prefer epoxy over etch primer?

I was also debating Zero Rust from rest rick?

My preference is to sand/lightly grind the underside of the roof.
This will take some time. Do not press hard on the roof skin from
underneath.

You're going to be working upside down so to speak so make sure you wear eye protection /dust mask/respirator.

Then you can use either wash/ epoxy or zero rust etc...

The wash/etch primer requires another primer on top of it before
painting. Like PPG K36 which has to be sanded before painting.

If you use epoxy primer (like PPG DPLF) you can spray 2 coats of
epoxy, wait a day and paint right over it. no sanding required..

Just my

Best of luck to you

Thanks for the feedback. I certainly want to avoid sanding between painting. Can you etch or epoxy prime, then paint it months later? Or can you etch prime now, epoxy over it later in the process, , then top coat way down the road?

Don't know my way around paint much yet. But I plan to do work on the inner roof, underside, and possibly engine compartment, before turning it over to a pro to do the finish sheet metal work. Expect time gaps between work, and don't want to have any compatibility issues when they do finish work.

I used a combination of media blasting and wire wheel and da sander to get mine clean and rustfree.I then put two coats of dip gray zero rust from Resto Rick.It is my understanding that once it is fully cured, which is very important, you can topcoat it with your color coat.I am going to leave mine with the zero rust as it will all be covered by the headliner.I am very impressed with the way the zero rust sprays and cures to a very tough coating.I also got one of those wand attachments and sprayed it in all the roof cavities. Also the complete underside of the car.

I can't speak for other paint systems (DuPont, Sikkens, etc)
With PPG Deltron, your wet-on-wet opportunity is about a week.
For example, With the DPLF epoxy primer, you can spray it
one day...and within a week you can topcoat it with either a
urethane primer for blocking or paint, if the panel is straight.
WITHOUT having to scuff or sand it. It's a big time savings.

Anytime after a week, you are going to have to scuff the surface (scothbrite) first,
wipe it off, tack it off and then you are required to spray 1 coat of epoxy, then wait an hour and then topcoat etc..

The p-sheet (tech bulletin) for the paint product your spraying should provide you with this information.

This is PPG's Deltron line of paint/primer etc...
It is VERY expensive but I love it...
Other's on here can chime in with their paint systems...

If you've never sprayed a car before, I recommend taking a collision
repair/paint course at your local community college if it is available.

Just my

Best of luck to you
