Wow...someone can't deliever or pickup 5 hours away?
Sorry no help other than to suggest to call all the trucking freight places near you. It's gonna cost a lot I bet. Also need to build a wood box for it on top of a wood skid. 5 hrs away? I would not chance shipping it unless your familer with shipping heavy items like that.

Best advice meet him half way or drive the 5 hours. It's going to cost about $600 to ship and is a pain in the ass. I've shipped lots of engines and every time it takes about 2-3 hours to prep and go to the terminal.

5 hours away ? ... I would drive it there ...ORE have them come get it. You will be jerking around with the shipper more than that PLUS the costs ...

$600 to an engine? Wow! My brother shipped a short block to Puerto Rico and it was $300. I would think with the gas prices and the 10 hrs shipping would be the best.guess not

600$ to ship ...I don't think so .... but for all the hassle you have to go-through on both ends ....with additional packaging .. it would not be worth all-that.

Now if your time is worth 100$ per hour ....then just ship it.

A guy wanted to buy one of my engines last week. He is 6 hrs away. After a week of waiting, he emailed me again and asked that I ship it to him. I just told him no. I wasn't going to, it was too much of a hastle. Now he wants to buy parts off of it. I don't think so. I was willing to take the drive for 300 extra, but he hadn't contacted me back. So then another guy wanted me to crate it up for transport to Sweden. I declined again. Shipping large items are a hastle.

Yesterday I shipped a complete E body front end with K member and all new rebuild parts in the box. Right down to the 2 piece rotors and calipers. It went to Belgium. It takes a long time to get stuff ready to get banged around on a truck and container. I would rather drive. Or buy/sell local.

You don't say what condition the engine is in.
Rusty, greasy core without oil in the pan is one thing. Screw some eye hooks into a pallet, strap it down and send it.
Fresh long block on a nice oil pan or not fully sealed is a whole 'nother deal.
Gotta seal it and prevent damage to all exterior.
Build a stand and box around it so it is safe or get one of the crate engine boxes. Make sure a forklift can easily pick it up and move it.

I bought an engine from Cab Burge. It was a 6.5 hour drive to his home. I brought a co-pilot, plugged Cab's address into my Garmin and away we went (at 2:00AM !) We arrived at his house at 9:00, bench raced for a couple of hours (the man is a treasure!) loaded the engine into a 5 x 10 U-haul box trailer on top of a Hoosier road race tire (very stiff sidewalls) and strapped it down to the corners of the trailer. We drove home in a snow storm, even so we were back home at 9:00PM. The engine (440 long block with tin) never moved and aside from some rub marks on the pan it was perfect. It cost me fuel, trailer rental and meals for two (a 700 mile roundtrip)about $400.00 and well worth it. Life is an adventure. Do It!

Ok let me fill you in.i wanted to ship my engine to shady instead of making two 10 hour trips i would ship it and when its ready i would pick.i did the trip last year and it was cool because i made it a small get away over a weekend.$400 in gas than food and drinks than what else you buy along the way adds up.plus 10 of driving time priceless i could be working on my engine compartment. by the way i just talked to my brother and he said the shipping company came to his house to pick up a short block.

Not really sure what all the fuss is about. I shipped a fresh bare hemi block along with rods and pistons in a separate package all secured to a pallet from TN to Miami, where it was then transported to Europe (the overseas shipping was taken care of by the buyer, not me). It took me all of about an hour to get everything packed/ sealed up/ strapped to the pallet. Cost me $219. Just received a hemi block with crank, rods, and pistons still in it today, shipped collect so I could pay whatever the shipping cost when it arrived. It came from Massachusetts to me here in TN... cost $250. It's not a nightmare for those of us who don't care to saran wrap and then strap something down securely, take some 24" 2x4's and nail them to a pallet, and staple some thick cardboard to them making a box, then saran wrapping it. Like I said, it takes about an hour and you're done. Then the freight company picks up the pallet wherever you choose (residential costs a little more, as does liftgate service, but it's minimal), and gives you a tracking number to give to the buyer. Go to www.freightcenter.com (that's who I used) and they will give you quotes from several companies. Just put in the "from" and "to" zip codes and the total weight of the pallet. I did it and they picked it up the next day, and delivered it to Miami two days later.

I shipped a 572 from california to lousiana along with the headers and was over $800 from my work. we used USF reddaway and was the cheepest and would insure it for less money. It weighed over 600 lbs plus the box i put it in was a little big but it got there safe.

And Freight center mentioned earlier
I will be curious as to what it costs.

I bought my shortblock from member cudadon here, he sold me his homemade engine stand, fastened it all to a pallet, wrapped it in industrial polythene and dropped it at the shipping warehouse about, i think it was around 50-60 miles away.
Touch wood, the motor has far exceeded my expectations and i hope it continues to do so.
I really appreciate the time and care he took to get it to me in one piece.
