There will be a Hemi class at the Curt George Memorial at Pittsburgh in June.

Early format ideas is to have two separate categories, NSS Hemi, Outlaw Hemi, with the two class winners meeting for the title. Full bodied cars only, no altereds or diggers. For the NSS guys it will be a good warm up for the Beaver.

Anyway, there has been suggestions as to letting some of the Gen III Hemis in...provided they can run the number. We're thinking somewhere around 12 flat and down. We want race cars, not vehicles like my great Hemi Durango.

This is still in the planning stage....so we're open for ideas. Are there any Gen III racers who would be interested?

The floor is open.

The Hemi class will be sponsered by Bud's Auto Sales from Beaverdale Pa.Ron and Buddy McCelland are great supporters of the Curt Race and both race Mopars and own quite a few Hemi, wedge and small block Mopars.

Is this class at Bob George Race turning into a NSS Hemi Super Stock where 1970 and 1971 Hemi car are being excluded from racing in Hemi Super Stock. I'm reading all these posting encluding Beaver Creek and it sounds like 1970 and 1971 Cuda's and Challengers are out.
Thanks / Gary

Gary, the Pittsburgh race is going to be open to all Hemis, including E bodies...yours will be just fine. There is going to be some outside money and other goodies posted, and it will be a good event. I doubt if Gen III Hemis will be in, that does not seem to have been real well recieved.

The BSD deal is a bit different....they use pretty much NSS rules; mid sixties full bodies, two four barrels, big block only...no chassis cars, etc. The only exceptions are factory "package" cars, i.e; the 68 Mustang CJ's; the 68 Hemi Darts & Cudas; and the AMX SS package cars. They are talking about allowing correct year Hemi E bodies in this year; providing they meet the rest of the criteria.....they have the two four barrells, they are big blocks, it could happen. I'll keep you posted. Again, for this event there is a lot of outside goodies posted..it's going to be big.

The Hemi shootout there is to augment their NSS race; the NSS field up there is second to none in the country.

I'll keep you posted....if your a Hemi guy; June & July just might be a good time to spend up here in the Keystone State...

I have several customers that would be interested in participating but I am sure would not want to come if the general attitude is that they aren't welcome. I even had customer who would be willing to ship his car from out of state to participate.

12.0 and under would be easy for most of this mildly modified cars.

Just my thoughts. However,I understand if it won't fit the agenda/program, just thought it would be a fresh addition.

I think the consensus is that the Gen III, although maybe not having a pure performance advantage, would have an advantage with all of the electronics over the carbureted brethren. It's been pointed out that they run in separate classes at other events.

Like I said, nothing is in stone yet....so, we're open for the Gen III viewpoint.

We don't want any "outlaw"; nitrous, street cars, though....I can tell you that. But, a pure drag race car that is Gen III powered...let's hear the viewpoint. Maybe it's worth discussing further.

Let's hear it. Ronnie & I are clueless on this stuff....we're real dinosaurs. Educate us.

I suspect neither of your are as much a dinosaur as me but I will humor you

Being an old school Mopar racer I can sympathize with the lack of understanding causing either concern or confusion. However, these are just small block (345-370ci) internal combustion engines, nothing more. Sure, folks are building stroker engines up to 440ci but these are not the norm. You will see some 426's out there but to be honest most of them aren't that much faster than a well built and tuned 5.7 (345). In fact, the 5.7 and 6.1 classes have now been combined at the Modern Hemi events with only a slight minimum weight difference. Another disadvantage these cars have is a 6750rpm transmission rev limit. This is a killer for these small block engines that can easily make power to 8k. Unless you swap out to a 904 or 727 (which isn't permitted in the Gen III classes) you are stuck at shifting at 6700 or the car goes into "limp" mode which requires stopping the car, putting it in neutral or park, restarting and then proceeding down the track - not a great option for 1/4 mile racing....

A Gen III Hemi setup like an old school street stock class (headers, gears, tires, intake) should be able to easily run high 11's low 12's all day.

The neat thing is that there quite a few of these cars out there. Manny owned by folks with old school Mopars too.

You've given us something to think about. Maybe you are a dinosaur like us...I'm into my 60s now, been doing this since 1964 and kind of got stuck somewhere around 1970 or so. So, maybe you are one of us.

It is an interesting thought. My son has a max wedge 64 Dodge NSS car, as well as a S/G Duster, and also drives a 2009 Hemi Challenger that he loves. I have no clue what all that stuff does on there.....but, will cede it is a neat car.

Thanks for the input. We'll discuss it.....it's worth thinking about.

Tell your son to give me a call if he needs a Diablosport tuner or wants a remote tune via email. We can help him make that thing hum

I started in the early 70's so you may have a couple of years on me but I still feel like I'm 18 if that means anything......

And to show I am truly open minded, my son drives a Honda hatch that he bought for $125, swapped in an Acura 4cyl(yeah it's really a hemi too), daily drives it and get close to 28 mpg and trapped the same MPH as me on his first 1/4 mile adventure.

I consider myself fairly open minded...but a Honda would push me pretty hard...

Yeah, it hurt initially, especially since I have complete, built 440's and 727's just sitting here itching to be put in something....

BTW - You stole my line about old age trumping youth

I'm building a '66 Coronet for IHRA Super Stock Production (think A/IHRA Formula Stock, one four barrel). It will be a 426" Hemi with 32x14 tires. Would it be legal for this or would I have to run Box/No Box?

Bob - Happy to hear that the Curt Memorial race is comming together, it really sounds good. I would also like to thank Bud's Auto Sales for coming on board, it makes me feel a little better since his win light came on the last time we ran.
What really makes me happy is that Murphy will be able to run with us and hopefully Charlie Buehler will be in attendance. Someday, before I get out of this bad habit, it would be my honor to put these two guys on the trailer. SOMEDAY - Bob thanks for all the help - hope all is well with you. HEMI JOE
