Yep clutch type sure grip. Gear ratio should be stamped on the outside edge of ring gear

Looks like everyone is lucky these days. I needed an axle for the truck just before Moparfest. Got what was supposed to be a 3.23 open for $150 complete.
Bad news, a 3.55, same as I have now. Good news, a clutch type sure grip.
Nice find, Jeff.

Sounds like I made out OK. Hundred bucks for the gears and hundred bucks for the rear end to put it in.
Have not looked yet, easy enough to take the rear end apart to switch out the pumpkin ??

Unbolt retainers and pull axles, then pull the center saction.

This may help ID what center you have.

Yeah You actually made out very good. I'm gonna take a stab and say you have 3.91's, not sure why, but they just look like 3.91's. Look at the bottom of the case just before the yoke and see what the last three numbers are. If it's a 741 case, and they are in-fact 3.91's, then they'll probably howl some, cos' most do. They are generally fine, they are just known to howl.

You paid a hundred for the sure grip , the gears themself , the ring gear anyway , looks pretty rusty to me .

My '64Dog came stock with a 741 and 3.91s and it did not have any noticeable rear end gear noise. Now are there transmission noises from the SM420, yep.

from the thickness of that ring gear, I'm gonna say 2.94 or maybe 3.23.

You guys rock, thanks, the guy said it was a 3:23 open set.
I will check out casting numbers and turn the gears to see if the ratio is stamped on the ring gear.

Not to pour ice-water on the deal, but let's hope it (the sure-grip unit) isn't worn-out (needing new clutches) and therefore acting like it's an "Open" differential.

Even if...it can be rebuilt and with some luck, it may work just fine, as-is.

Good score Another thing to remember on install is the centering pin in the posi if you do not have NON adjustable bearings on your axles.

NO, again look at the RUST on the gears , I'll bet thats not the only thing that has rust on it .

YMMV

Gears look better in person, actualy very clean.
Next question, removed the 5 bolts at the backing plate, should the axle just slide out or am I going to have to bang on it and fight with it?

"VMMV" ??

Thanks
Jeff

It will slide out. Sometimes, you may have to tug on it a little. The best way that I have found is pull it hard and try to add a little twist to either side as you pull, and it will slide out. You should only pull it about 2" or so, just be sure not to pull it all the way out, as you may cut the inner housing seal with the splines of the axle. Some will say to replace those housing seals, but for now, I'd just get the diff in there, a little over two quarts of diff oil, THEN additive, and see how the gears work first

A trick is to put the drum back on backward and thread a few of the lug nuts on loosely and use it as a slide hammer to pull the axles out.

DO not try to pry them out...

Thanks again for all the info guys. I'll go give the axles a tug, don't have the drums to try that neat slide hammer trick.
