I am not real familiar with this process and was hoping someone could tell me if this look right.

I got the dial indicator setup ad adjusted the dial to zero at the 12 o-clock position

Then I turned the engine over until the indicator was at the 9 o'clock position. If I am reading this right (which I may not be) it is at -.008 (is this read: "negative eight thousands"?)

Then, turned the engine over a little more, and I think I am at -.0065 (is that right?)

And finally at the 3 o'clock position I have +.002

So what is my runout? Do I take the full travel from -.008 to .002 = 10 divided by 2 = .005??

Thanks for any assistance.

Thats how I did mine. Is your stand really solid on the crank, It loks like you are on a bolt, Might be strattleing the bolt, but that looks just like I did mine. I had to use offset dowels, as my first measurement was 8 thou out, I used the dowels and got it as close as 2-3 thou...

If you have not, remove a bolt from the flywheel for the mag base. It has to be solid. As you spin around the full circle take notes more often than 90 degrees. I did it for every "ratchet" movement (as often as I had to back the ratchet up and crank it again), which probably equated to ~10 degrees. Once you have all your numbers, find the largest difference (i.e. your -2 to +8 for example), and then divide that by two.

I was then advised to check the parallel surface between the face of the bellhousing to the face of the flywheel.

In my case I needed to get offset dowel pins and am now at .002 runout. My parallel measurement after shimming is also .002.

I was shooting for under .005 for the runout, but never got any data on what the max is for the parallel measurement so I just got it as close as I can without going too crazy with it.

Thanks guys. I did remove a flywheel bolt and I have a solid mount on the flywheel. I actually checked it this way a couple times with the same .005 results.

I may just check it again with the every ratchet movement method too, since it's still all setup.
I will also check the face parrallelizm(sp?) too.

My 2003 Dodge Truck service manual says "maximum acceptable face runout is 0.010 inch"

PS. Is .005 read "five thousanths"?

I am working on a 5.7 Hemi with a Tremec TKO for my Dart. Spec says .005, So I am right on the money.

My 2003 Dodge Ram service manual is where I got that Max face runout of 0.010 inch. It also states that if the bore runout exceeds .053 inch, you need to replace the clutch housing.

Thanks

Seems like the newer transmissions are not allowing for as much runout. I heard anything under .010 from a few people too. But under .005 was achievable with offset dowel pins.
