ok heres the rundown. i have a 600 eddy and wonder if i can benefit from the same sized holley, or a larger cfm model.

83 318
magnum head swap
summit 6900 cam
headers
m1 dual plane intake
2.5" x pipe exhaust

ive heard storys of people noticing large differences in power levels from going from eddys to holleys. is it worth a shot?

any input is appreciated.

yes, no actual holley exp but have followed threads on it. I would attack the weakest/most restricted part of the overall air pump (the eng) which is usually the ex but If you had a good #1850 600 holley ready to go I'd definitely try it

I'm thinking of purchasing a new 600, 650, or 750. I'm still thinking a 750 might be a tad large

I'm running a 650 Holley on my 340. Most people tend to overcarb, so a smaller carb would be a good choice for a mild 318. For performance the Holley will trounce the Edelbrock. For gas mileage it won't. What do you intend to do with the car? Race? Cruise?
Holleys take a little more work to learn and dial-in, but once you do they are great.

Spend your money on getting your carb TUNED. A 600 is theoretically too big for a 318 but I'm running one and it's a good fit. No reason to go bigger.
The idea that bolting on a Holley in place of another carb will automatically increase power is only true if the first carb isn't set up right. Mopar engineers could specify any carb they wanted and they by and large picked AFBs and AVSs. Those two carb lines are now the Edelbrocks. If your carb is an electric choke model it came set up lean for mileage. If a manual choke model it came set up rich. Often the proper jetting for your engine will be somewhere in the middle. You need to find a decent chassis dyno or else someone who knows how to set up your existing carb, preferably using an exhaust gas analyzer.

R.

I really like the way a 750 vac works on a 318. you can tailor the secondary opening if you want it to come in faster but they work great on a 318 and the secondaries comes on at Higher RPM's a full throttle so till then it is just a 2 barrel!
Don't worry be happy!

Don't forget mother mopar used 800 thermos on 318's??

If you decide to run that carb on a 318 prepare to buy some jets and air bleeds (or find someone that has some you can try) to dial in the carb. I ended up having to do a bit of work to get one running on a stock 440. Not a bad carb, but will need a bit of calibration to get it right. I also had to change the spring in the vac. secondary diaphragm to slow down the secondary side of the carb (heavy car, highway gear, tight converter).

For a 318 I'd get this instead:

so your saying a 750 vac secondary will out perform a 600 eddy with my setup?

Yes by a bunch. The 750 vac holley is one of the best out there out of the box Just seems to work good 318 to 440. I had a 600 eddy then switched to my 750 vacuum on my 318 that had a cam intake and headers in my truck and it was at home there as on my 440.
Stock jets and just lighter secondary opening springs for a little faster to the 4 barrel opening (they are slow as shipped) and it would work great on whatever you plunked it on 318, 340, 360, 383/400 440.

So if your not up at 2500 feet or more will not need jetting but I do find the 4 barrel opens a little slow for me so buy a spring kit and start in the middle and go lighter stock spring is pretty tight!
Do check the float levels holley does not always have them right!

I miss that carb was so nice to flop on anything and it would run good when trouble shooting.

I also ran a 600 holley vac on that 318 (that is what was on it when i sold it) but the WOT had more kick with the 750.

You might want to try 68 to 70 jets at that altitude
