The car is currently set up with a 904 but I've broken it like 4 times. I have a 4 speed in the garage with bellhousing and floor. I've gotten to the point where I need to choose which I need to stick with. The car will be street driven mostly and I'd like to put some good gears in it like 4.56's. SO I'm thinking the 4 speed would be better for the freeway driving. What do you guys think is better. a $700 TCI tranny and a $500 torque convertor or invest $500 in the rest of the stuff I need for the 4 speed.

Whats the 4th gear like in that tranny (a-833) I think it's the standard old school tranny. Will it be just like an overdrive in a 4 speed automatic?

I'm going to go to the track pretty often in the future and I want to do damage so that's important.

oh ya and another question if I run a good auto trans with a 4,500 rpm stall on the freeways and everyday driving will it hurt the trans?

Thanks for the heads up guys

-Matt

Are you serious?

I assume so, but still.

4.56 gears and freeway driving?

4500 stall converter and freeway driving?

It really doesn't matter which trans you'll use, 904 vs 833, your car isn't really setup to drive on the freeway.

As for 4th gear, there are two possibilities, 1:1 is the more common one and there is an overdrive version, too. But it still won't help that setup you have much. In fact I'd venture to say that if your engine is build to NEED 4.56 gears then the OD version is a bad choice.

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

I had 3.91's in the car before 25" tire with the auto 3 speed tranny so I was thinking if I get the 4 speed with a taller 29" tire it might equal out to be about the same.

I have a .509 cam and it really makes power at like 4,500 so I assume maybe I should launch around there when I get it to the track. Maybe it would be better to use the clutch to get it up there.

just looking for opinions on which one would be better for me

my setup:

stock 360 shortblock
ferrea 2.02in 1.6 ex valves
port and polished by a good shop in san diego
dual springs, good retainers
victor jr port matched w/ plenum work
650 holley vac secondaries
1 7/8 primary 3.5 collector hedman husler headers
3.5in exhaust w/ 2 chamber flowmasters that dump right before the rear
msd digital 6 msd dist,wires,coil
good aeromotive pump, filer 1/2in lines return style regulator fuel cell
150 shot of nitrous w/ seperate holley blue pump and 1/2in lines for that also
8 3/4 rear 2.73 gears narrowed masterline axles
weld draglites 10in in the rear w/ 11.5 bfg's 4in rim in the front

My advice is:
1. If you race it, auto.
2. If you drive it, stick.
Nothing beats rowing your own gears around town. And eventually, you get close enuff with the stick at the track.

4.30 gears with 28" tires,904 with 4500 converter works fine with the combo. Sounds like you have very low compression which hurts with that camshaft. Sell the vaccum secondary carb and get a 700-750 DP.

The 904 and the older 833's both have a 1:1 final gear. Only advantage to the 833(other than fun factor) is there's no converter slip at cruise on the highway. But you will still be nailed by those 4.56 gears.

Have you measured a 28 inch tall tire on your car? If it is a 64 Dart, youll be hard pressed to get a 27 under there if it has the same wheel well as my '65 Barracuda. Measure from the center of the rear hub to the front lower corner of the fender, that is the closest point a tire would hit. Mine measures under 14" with a 8 3/4 rear. I would go A-727, bulletproof. Do you have the Z bar pivot that goes on the frame and the pedals? How about the headers thatll fit a manual? Lots of stuff for a manual.

I had some tall tires on it last month I think they were 27" off of a stock 07 charger they fit good. my tires are recessed in a little bit (rear measures 50" flange to flange) so it doesn't come out far enough to hit. yet. I'm going to put spacers on it to push the rim out a little and get a bigger tire and possibly cut the wheel well. It shouldn't be that bad. I already mini-tubbed the car myself I think that should have been harder.

At what horsepower does the 4 speed break?

I can get the z bar, clutch, flywheel, pilot bushing, pedals and all that stuff it should add up to less than a good trans.

The headers- they're fenderwells I don't think the z bar would hit but I'm not sure. There is nothing inside the framerail though so that should help right?

I do drive the car more than I race it. I'm not going to take the car on the freeway for long distances or anything maybe 30min-1 hour the most and I don't mind cruising 55-60 mph

I don't mind cutting the floor out for the 4 speed but if it has the same final drive as the auto then it kind of defeats the purpose other than the fun.....

If you're gonna spray with a stick make sure to get an RPM activates window switch that will shut off the hose if you miss a gear.

What are you breaking in the 904? I would talk to Keith at 727specialists before I spent any money with TCI.

http://www.727specialist.com/index.html

Keith built the 904's that I run in my junk. With a 150 shot of gas and a trans brake, I have had "0" problems running low 12's in a 3250# car.

A 904 should have no trouble living behind that combo.A good local builder should be able to build one for about half the TCI trans,I spend about $100.00 on my own and get 6 years or more street and strip. If you go to a 727 you also slow down slightly.
