Excess movement or binding are the normal reasons to replace the pins & bushings... Typically driving crappy is due to other problems... What are you working on that has king pins?

Dunno what the OP has, but I'm having a fit doing them on a 40 Ford right now. Having some trouble finding the correct reamer to size the bushings once installed.
Mike

Oh - I decided they needed replaced because the wheel had movement up and down when when wiggled, could see the motion was in the kingpins.

Shims control the up and down, not the king pins. But since you have to strip it down to shim it you may as well inspect the king pins and bushings.

Raise and support the axle. Grabe the wheel top and bottom. Move it in and out while someone watches the kingpin area. There should be very little movement.

The other scenario is.Lack of grease and rusted, hard steering, noise, or can have memory steer.Make a turn- won't return to center on it's own, make a turn-continues to pull in that direction. If rusted like that,It will be a bear to get them apart.I've done a few old ford trucks that were so stiff,The p.s. hose blew apart.check for play, stiffness.

As far as driving crappy adding a little caster & setting the toe can help allot... Worn linkages & steering gear are also common issues..

Might try www.speedwaymotors.com for their reamers

I would have a shop line hone them, makes for a better and longer lasting job than a reamer.

He might want to check his drag link. If it's worn, it can have a terrible shimmy/wobble at highway speeds.

Probably true, but the machine shops near here are somewhat, shall we say, less than top-notch. I haven't really checked closely and kinda hope one can do it, but many of them tend to get cross-eyed if it's anything off the beaten path.

Big rings still use straight axles. Check for local semi shops. They may not have the right size tools, but will have the expertise and the connections to get tools...

This is spot on information There is usually a retaining bolt on the back side of the kingpin in the axle to keep the king pin located, it needs to come out before trying to remove the king pins JC Whitney may still stock the kits for the new kingpins, bushings and reamers, maybe Speedway, Kramers and others also

Mr.Cab Racing and winning with Mopars since 1964. (Old F--t, Huh)
