Excess movement or binding are the normal reasons to replace the pins & bushings... Typically driving crappy is due to other problems... What are you working on that has king pins?

Dunno what the OP has, but I'm having a fit doing them on a 40 Ford right now. Having some trouble finding the correct reamer to size the bushings once installed. Mike Oh - I decided they needed replaced because the wheel had movement up and down when when wiggled, could see the motion was in the kingpins.

Shims control the up and down, not the king pins. But since you have to strip it down to shim it you may as well inspect the king pins and bushings.

As far as driving crappy adding a little caster & setting the toe can help allot... Worn linkages & steering gear are also common issues..

I would have a shop line hone them, makes for a better and longer lasting job than a reamer.

He might want to check his drag link. If it's worn, it can have a terrible shimmy/wobble at highway speeds.

Probably true, but the machine shops near here are somewhat, shall we say, less than top-notch. I haven't really checked closely and kinda hope one can do it, but many of them tend to get cross-eyed if it's anything off the beaten path.
