Hi,

I'm trying to figure out a mystery that I came across on my '68
Charger R/T. It is a 4 speed car. My broadcast sheet states it should have springs 795 and 965 part numbers. The springs in the car are 794 and 964. I thought that someone might have changed them before I owned the car ( I have owned it for 25 years now, and the prior owner (1977-1986) just told me he never touched them)), but when I looked at the date code, it is exactly in the correct date range of my build date (dec. '67).

So, Could these be the original springs? I know many Charger R/T's that I have seen the build sheet to, have the 795 / 965 springs. What is the difference, and maybe the factory switched over to this part number in jan, and my car got the new number??

Thanks for any help,
Greg.

I have springs with 964 with a 5 stamped under...don't know if they just added the 5 at the factory to cover early '69 cars 965 code or not. I know of a pair out of a '68 r/t that has 964 and also a mid '69 with 965.......other side same as yours in all cases-same exact springs no matter which 964 or 965

Yeah, this seems to be one of those mysteries. I don't see any difference at all, either , between the two springs. I just saw a 68 auto charger r/t with late January build date and the sheet calls for the "4" springs and it had them on the car still.

thanks for the info.

While I don't have the parts book for your year and body style, my findings for the A-body leaf springs suggest a possibility. The stamping might be for the main spring part number rather than the spring with all the leafs and interleaves assembled.

Years ago when I looked at both the 1968 and 69 parts books, there were about 10 different leaf spring part numbers listed for A-bodies. However there were only two different main leaf part numbers. But relevant to your question, the main leafs had part numbers very similar to some of the leaf assemblies, especially the last 3 digits. Sometimes just one digit different.
