Well looks like there is no escape from the offsore invasion of crap brake drums. I find myself in an unfotunate position in needing new brake drums. I ordered a set from the local supply house (11 X 2-1/2"), paid my $79.00 ea plus tax (Raybestos), and find the center opening has this goofy lip around it where the rim sits, so it the face is not flush.

I seen a tech on Mopar Action that suggests these are unusable. Im wondering if all this aftermarket junk is the same. Anyone else see this? Can this lip be ground flat and still center on the axle? Any drums out there that don't have this problem?

Yup, there is no escape. From what I'm hearing it's all made there now. I did some checking and it like some OEM Mopar drums had this lip (just don't know which ones). Apparently they work on some wheels depending on what the mounting surface of the wheel looks like.

I might try to get the stock ones turned to see if they clean up. Not sure if there's enough meat left not to mention being able to find someone that still have a lathe.

Stock 68 and under wheels work, stock 69 and up won't work. It does look like I could grind this lip off.

It awesome to have to pay $79 bucks a piece for the privelage of allowing me to have to rework them. Man we here in North America are in big trouble! At least the Wix fuel filters I bought are made in the US.

May as well keep the expensive cheapo chinese crap and grind them. Maybe I'll get creative and run a mill over them.

I got stuck with a set of those too. I'd be interested to hear what luck you have.

I sent Raybestos an email and the reply I got stated that they have been this way for 40 years (maybe its because I said 69 Road Runner). He says that the the lip fits in a recess in the rim. I think in some cases it's true, in others it's not.

I'll peel a rim off this weekend and see whats what. If there's a problem, I'll mill the lip off. The guys at the shop say they have done this before. They usually grind it off.
