I need to replace my 383 fuel pump. Looking to stay mechanical. Any suggestions? Upgrades?

When I was running mechanical pumps I used Holleys. Ran them on 2 different RBs with no problems. But that has been about 20 years ago. Maybe someone else will jump in with some recommendations.

Street or strip? Having delivery issues right now or just a bad pump (did it deliver enough when new but not now or is it leaking?) What pump on there now? A parts house pump is not enough for your needs? I supported a 9:1CR 2bbl (class rules) 360 @ WOT at 6400 with a parts house "airtex" pump w no starvation. Is the pushrod OK (length is 3.250" iirc). If stepping up I would suggest avoiding a Carter & if you go w a Carter I'd take it apart & good visual EDIT & was using 5/16" hard line to boot

What P said. My parts house airtex puts out over 7 at idle so I'm putting a red Holley reg on it to get it below 5 (318 dd/eddy 1406). If you need a pushrod google old threads to find the best one to get as some wear unbelieveably fast (poor metallurgy somewhere in mfg). What prob are you having?

Hello:
I have always used Carter Pumps and never had a problem...Mancini has a good selection to chose from cost from low to high.

Hello:
Just wondering what was the response from Carter on your four bad pumps?

I was too mad t call them.Just called Summit and they replaced them.On the SB it was a new motor.I pulled the whole frt off because I though I had a bad pump cam or it was loose. One on the BB the spring under the arm actually shot into the pan.My kid got it out with a magnet. That one lasted a week. The SB one never pumped at all.One on my 440 lasted 2 days.Another on a BB lasted about a year. Then dropped pressure. My Holley had 7 PSI it was running 3 or less.Never again will I buy a Carter.Rocky

BB, make sure you check the pump push rod for correct length (wear item) while you are in there. It causes problems if worn excessively.

Very true.. Just rebuilt my hemi w/ a 574 lift solid.flat tappet cam & the repop pushrod was soft & took out the cam lobe with almost 1/2" of the pushrod tip. I'd think yours is probably oe, being so stock. I did switch.to the Eddy mech pump which may have more arm pressure than the hemi carter. Either one of those pumps would take care of your 440's needs.
