Seen alot lately - But did the 68's have them also? Restoring my 68 GTX, and found none, but they had been spray bombed before, and any numbers(if any) were probably lost. If so, what would the numbers have been, and exactly where on the cover? Also, what colors were used? Any pics from the same time frame (SPD of 5-24-68 @ St. Louis plant)would be great. Thanks

My 68 RR has marking on the right cover facing alt. My car is a st louis car with a 5/21/8 spd. Sorry no pics right now as I am moving and pc is down right now. I should be able to post some in the next week.

Yup, one cover has the engine code and the other the trans code. I've seen Hemis in white or yellow, wedges in black.

RRunner, those pics would be awesome. No hurry, just get to them whenever you can. BTW, if you're moving, stay down south - I'm up north and you don't want what we have up here(not to mention all the salt on the roads). In the meantime, did the numbers correspond to the engine code and in what color? With a SPD that close to mine, I would feel pretty confident that my 'X would have had them applied as well. Anyone know what the engine code was for a HP 440 in '68? Fender tag code was an 83, but isn't this different than the engine code on the build sheet? Which one did they use? I have only fragments of the build sheet (found in a mouse nest inside the console)and unfortunately it didn't include that specific part. As for the trans code, where was this applied and what was it for an automatic?

In the meantime, anyone else care to chime in with their own observations? Even all you charger/coronet/superbee folks should have input as to what is found on the valve covers of you engines, be it the 383 or 440 versions. So lets have it, what was the protocol for these numbers on all the '68 valve covers at the St. Louis plant?

Here's a 68 383 auto....Nothing on the left valve cover...

Just realized that I have never seen these markings on small blocks. Was this strictly a big block and/or a plant specific deal?
