I am in the process of restoring a 77 Warlock and will be replacing all the brake lines, wheel cylinders, calipers and master cylinder with new ones. Is there a brake fluid other than DOT 3 I can use that will not harm the paint finish if I spill some? I was thinking of using DOT 5 synthetic in the rebuilt system but are the brake system seals compatible?

I've had synthetic in my Road Runner for 15 years and in my Fury for 3 years. I haven't had a single problem, but I'm sure you'll hear from somebody who has. I've heard that there are brake manufacturers who won't guarantee there parts if you use dot 5, but I don't know that for certain.

First, all brake fluid is synthetic. DOT 5 is silicone-based, and the others are glycol-based. I have switched my vehicles to DOT 5 by sucking as much out of the MC as I can, filling with DOT 5, and then bleeding until I see purple at each wheel. No problems whatsoever.

If anyone doubts compatibility, think of the assy grease that comes with wheel cyl kits, etc. It is silicone grease, and seems to do just fine in a glycol-filled system.

It's Swifty! Swifty, you toad sucker!

I've done this many times, get all of the old stuff out of the M/C as you can and bleed until you see purple! NEVER had any issues in over 20 years and numerous cars!
