I wrapped up the season with a borrowed 64 polara, with my old spare engine in it and thought I'd share the info. Not sure if its close to a record or not, but the bottom is a 77 440 w/low miles, .154 down in the hole, never ever been cracked apart. I shouldn't say that, I undid two rod bolts to inspect and never did so it got torqued back up . This is a full steel car/interior, 3650lb ported 906's, .528 cam, ran best of 12.04 at 110.1. It also proppelled me to a 200 point lead in sp/m, with one race to go. So the intention is hell or high water, I'm running "The Never Ending Charger" in the last race. Thanks to my buddy Bert for lending me the car, And testing the Indy/383 in the cuda.

I had a 78 "Cop-Motor" in my Savoy when I first put it together with a used 509 cam, stock spread-bore intake,850 spread-bore double pumper, and 3.23 gears. It went 12.99 108 MPH with a bench seat pistol grip shifter(the one with about 24"throw) I had alot more fun with the car back then Gus

I have used the .528 cam in a few smogger big blocks. The 440 I ran managed a 11.901@111.6mph, car was 3650 with driver. I also used 1.6 iron rockers, no idea if that helped. 1.62 60' times. Open headers in good air. Ran 12.3@108 in street trim. The smogger 400 ran 12.9@108 with 2.0 60' as the converter was too tight. I currently use a stock bottom end 69 383 with 452 heads and a cam close to the .528 and 1.5 rockers. It runs 11.8's @ 114 in the same car. Its 9-1 comp and I race on 87.

12.35/111 mph with a 3600 lbs car and 3.91 gears. The '74 short block actually wasn't completely stock, since we home honed and reringed it after purchasing from the junk yard, but that's all we did. Heads were the open chambers that came from the factory (with different castings on both sides), pocket ported and with stock valves, milled .040" Cam was a MP 280/.474" hydraulic, intake a Torker2, 3310 holley, factory distributor with advance spring tweaking, 2" primary headers and 3" dualpipes. The true CR was 8.6:1. We tried M1 intake, MP 292 cam, roller rockers etc, but the engine didn't really respond. Anyway, it worked well without spending a fortune.

Mines not the fastest, but it's not too bad for what it is....
'78 440 short block MP .557 cam 906 heads milled to 80cc, std. port, 2.14/1.81 valves Crane ductile rockers box stock 750 vac., minus choke plate
I've had three different intakes on it so far, and they all run in the 11.70-75 range, a Torker II, Holley SD and now an M1 single plane.
The car weighs 3,350 with me and has run a best ET of 11.66. My best mph was 115 on an 11.69 pass. This is with 4.10's and a 28" street tire through mufflers.

Well heres a few side notes on my combo... I put my 5500 A1 convertor in it, so with the wimpy cam it was out of steam making the convertor seem a bit slippery. If it had more cam I think it would've helped ets, but over rpming was a concern. I didn't want to turn more than 6400, even though I've read that the stock pistons are stronger than stock replacements. the compression was 8.2 thanks to the steel head gaskets, every bit helps right? I really wanted to see an 11 at our track, but ran out of time to T&T. If I had the resources, I'd make a trip to Gimli Manitoba, They say its good for 2 to 3 tenths over SIR, but oh well It didn't happen. Might have to do some more testing in the future, I have no plans to get rid of it.

My '73 440 had 93,000 miles on it when I got it, and was sludged up bad. I hand honed and reringed it, crank was in bad shape so had it reground, but reused the factory pistons since that was all I could afford. They were .143" in the hole..... Cam was MP .484 hydraulic, I tried alot of different bolt-ons but the last way it ran was a Performer RPM/850 annular, hooker comps, 3" H pipe. It had 346 heads that I milled .060 which then caused problems with the intake fitting correctly (I didn't really know any better, learned all about that 1st hand), and also I home ported by eye and with no experience, so I probably messed them up. The valves were reground stock ones with 93,000 miles on them In the signature car with 3.91 gears, and the last of 2 converters I tried which was a 9", it ran a best of et of 12.53. In hotter weather it would usually go like 12.65. In fact the signature pic was taken when the old 440 was still in the car...there's no roll bar, and I used to race it using slightly frayed 1969 lap belts, and no shoulder belt at all. Probably wasn't the smartest thing to do at the time.... mph was pretty much always between 106 and 108, didn't matter what else I changed. Intakes, carbs, jetting, shift points, timing, converters.....didn't matter...it was always 106 to 108mph. So I figured I was either a lousy tuner, a crappy driver, or both, or that smog 440s just aren't very picky and will make halfway decent power even if you screw up a bunch of things. Still haven't figured that one out but am leaning towards lousy tuner/crappy driver.

Mine's not really a smogger but it was a Gunboat Propeller. Came out of a 68 New Yorker 4 door. Got a stock freshen up for Dad's Challenger in 1991. Went through numerous changes of bolt-ons from about 2001 - 2006. At that time Dad did something to Smack some valves and put some nasty dents in the pistons and killed some valves on his Eddy heads. His 496 was now complete so a swap was underway anyhow. Then we had some fun!! . One of the pistons was Gaulling (spelling?) to the wrist pin, worst dented piston of the batch, so we decided to Put some new rings in the motor with a light hone and a new ( Ha ha!!! under bench spider home kind of new) piston and rod assembly from who knows what. Measured out within specs so should be fine. Now it was time to pull the mid 13 second 383 out of my car and borrow a 440 (THANKS DAD!! ) I have a 3/8 and -8 fuel system, 1-3/4 NO NAME headers, TM-7 intake , 800 DP , all Chrysler elec ignition but leaking Blaster 2 coil,MP 509 cam, home ported 452 heads,3000 stall, 3.91's and 26x10.5 ET STREETS, and I run through 2-1/4 exhaust all the way back. Times are in sig....... Don.
