When re-assembling a shifter, what should I use to lube in-between the shift levers and the other parts in the shifter? I thought I read somewhere not to use grease, Because it collects dirt.

Would I use Graphite? Lithium? Silicone Lube? Something else?

FWIW when I got mine back from Hurst back in the 80's it was lubed with some kind of black moly grease...

I have a partial tube of moly-graphite lube from the last engine I put together. Wonder if that would work, if I just used a small amount?

I think it would be fine...Did you weld up the broken lever?

Thats what I was thinking too. I dont use revers very much, just in parking lots.

I put a good thick layer of metal over each of the breaks and stress cracks. Then smoothed and reshaped it back to original. Heated the whole thing up red and dropped in bucket of oil to partially re-harden it.

Well, the shifter is in and working like a charm now.

Ever since I've been driving this car, even back when I was 16, its been very difficult to get into reverse. Goes in very easily now. The small amount of moly between the levers works great.

We have an old can of it at work that no one uses, its some dark gray/black nasty type of paste , similar to the consistency of the old crane cam break in lube in those little black plastic containers, it looked very similar to what was in a newer box I had.

if i remember correctly the service manual says to use motor oil. thats what i use every year like a thick 20/50, grease would attract grit but i'm not 100% on that

I just went through my Hurst box yesterday. I used a synthetic "green grease" found at any auto parts store. It has better lubricating qualities than regular grease, resists water and wont dry up like regular grease. Also be sure your dust shield is in place on the bottom side of the shifter box.

You should contact www.passonperformance.com and talk to Jamie. He rebuilt my Hurst shifter about 2 yrs ago.
