We have an old can of it at work that no one uses, its some dark gray/black nasty type of paste , similar to the consistency of the old crane cam break in lube in those little black plastic containers, it looked very similar to what was in a newer box I had.

I just went through my Hurst box yesterday. I used a synthetic "green grease" found at any auto parts store. It has better lubricating qualities than regular grease, resists water and wont dry up like regular grease. Also be sure your dust shield is in place on the bottom side of the shifter box.
