Hi Guys & galls! I'm rebuilding my old street/strip Challenger into street only and was thinking what transmission to go for... Thought to ask some input here. It will have a Hemi under the hood so need something with bb bellhousing. Might be auto or manual... as long as it has some decent overdrive in it. Thought about converting a 518 to a bb bellhousing but something 5speed would be nice too... hmm any thoughts? Came along; passon performance 5speed manual keisler 5speed manual tci 5speed auto tci 6speed auto - to much coins gearvendors behind anything - not much od ratio A518 4speed auto Any pro's and con's? Thank you all once again ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif)

I went with the 518 BUT that thing is heavy... to me I would run either the 518 or the gearvendor ... the gearvendor is just a little less OD than the 518 but a LOT less weight and that can hold up good with power... I'm running the 518 behind a 416 SB in my Rampage that I'm building for drag week stuff.. it has about 550 hp ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wave.gif)

One thing with the GV: you could just keep your current transmission. Theoretically, this should require the least amount of work and hassle.
It's Swifty! Swifty, you toad sucker!

Very true and in the long run it MIGHT be cheaper to go with the GV due to the bell housing change and cross member change... a GV is ABOUT $2900, a 518 can be found fairly cheap but with the rebuild and the bell(with the assorted parts that go along with it) it might be getting close price wise but the GV is at at a lesser weight ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shruggy.gif) Also IF you go with the 518 you need to find a 2 pin OR 3 pin connector on the trans.. these are the NON computer controlled... the 2 pin is OD only and the 3 pin is OD and lock up converter(both of these are hydraulically controlled units ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wave.gif)

Being a street/strip car I would assume your not afraid of modifying the car, IMHO the GV or Passon 5 spd (when/if avaliable?) is more for the "I really don't want to mod my car crowd, but want an OD"....I prefer manual transmission, IMHO if you want some "decent" OD ratios, either a Keisler TKO 600/650 .64 OD, or Keisler/Tremec 6 spd .50 OD T56
Depending on your HEMI build's HP/torque level, if it's over 700+ ftlbs, a Tranzilla 5/6 spd would fit the bill, depending on your coin level...
If Auto and GV is your desired route a CRT (Cope) 727 is avaliable in many build levels, again depending on your HP/torque to $$$$$ ratio

I went the 518 route on a 440 71 Challenger
Positives - Definetly cheaper than $2900 assuming you do the work yourself including a rebuild kit (clutch packs and seals). The transmount isn't too hard, I reworked the 727 mount. The .68 final ratio is nice. Cruising down the highway at 1800 rpm (with the torque converter locked) is sweet. I used the JVX adapter plate. This worked out well since it moves the transmission back 1/2". This gives clearance for the speedometer cable and the transmission crossmember.
Negatives - The 518 is very heavy. You will need to modify the transmission tunnel if you want to keep the drivetrain aligned. Some folks on the net say just a little hammering is needed, I have not found that to be true.
Good Luck.
I took out the lock up factor and changed the input shaft and pump so I could run a high stall conv(5000 stall) but with the OD on and slippage rate, gear and tire size I will be at 3000 rpm at 75 mph which I can live with ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wave.gif)

Thanks so far guys! Keep it coming...
I'm in no way limited to the options spec'd, these were the 1st I came along. As for modifying the car , that would be no problem at all. It already was (4-speed hump, cage, minitubbed etc.) and now as it will be street only it's also lowered, homemade streetlinx setup and more. Still have to modify the tunnel to prevent things to lock up because it's lowered a bit much lol
Hemi will be putting out around 500hp but you never know with 8:1 CR...

That's the one i'm leaning towards to... Stick is the way to go, just hope to find out an aftermarket 5speed auto is expensive too lol. I row the gears with my racer too and it's the best fun I ever have, using 4 gears in 8sec ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif) Which part# T56 do you use? The 11011 with adapting bellhouse?
