Has anyone used a one piece magnum oil pan gasket successfully with an LA center sump oil pan? The pans look the same except for the two areas where the two piece rail gaskets meet the front seal.

I tried it twice, both times slinging oil out the front. Changed to a LA gasket and stopped it. I used about 2 tubes of black sealer and stil could not stop the oil. I guess the LA timing cover is not the same on the bottom.

76' Volare, 5.9 magnum w/Iron heads. New best 10.68 at 123 mph 1/4 mile.

I agree. I tried it once and it left a gap you could see at the front and rear seals.

However since it is a two piece, and if like me you already got the magnum one, I would cut the front and back off the magnum and use the magnum sides insead of the la side as it looks like a much better setup with the metal inserts. I thought of that after I sealed with the la gasket set.

It's really easy to use a "magnum" one piece gasket with the early pan and leaks aren't a problem. All you need to do is make 2 shims to the pan to make it like the "magnum" pan. Aluminum flat stock is easy to use and availible at most hardware stores, you'll need 2 short self tapping sheet metal screws to attach the shims to the pan,use the factory holes in the pan. Cut the aluminum to fit,pre-drill the shims to match the holes in the pan,use a little RTV on the pan or shims, then screw them together, cut off the extra screw hanging inside the sealing area of the pan, assemble and go. Real easy and I have one pan thats been like that for 8 years ,never a leak.

Great ideas ! I was thinking I could use a hammer and dolly to bang out the two reliefs on the LA pan to make a full curve like the magnum pan. Your idea seems easier. I thought about trying to goop the gasket in these areas , but I knew that any crankcase pressure at all would blow it out. Thanks for the advice.

What did you do about the rear part of the seal?? I didn't know about the gap in the front when I did this in 2001 and mine leaks a lot. No one mentioned the front gap on Moparts then.

But the rear just didn't seem to fit at all. Pan has positve outward stamping. This SCE magnum gasket has a positive molding that I would think fits a negative oil pan stamping.

You can see the corner gap here

It must depend on which pan you have, because mine fits perfectly on the back, it's just those two voids for the front seal that I have to deal with.
