i was hoping for an over the counter plug that i could get locally... ive heard that accels dont last long and my plugs are not easy to change, i put the 440 in my amc hornet so space is very limited

Can you ding the tube a little bit to make room for the plug ? I've heard of people using lawn mower size plugs when they have this problem. I think one of the plug manufacturers make short plugs for this problem. Hopefully somebody with more info on the short plugs will chime in.

you can try these - Autolite 2974. they're what's called a shorty and will work in a 440. Accel shorty's are fine too but try and find them!

i looked at the autolites and they are the same length as the champions... and the lawnmower plug is a 3/8 thread length and 13/16 socket size.. i am at my wits end.... i may have to ding the header but i really dont want to..

If and thats a big if you can find an old time parts man that still has catalogs plus know how to read them, I did say if didntI? Champion, Autolite and most all manuf. had index, cross reference charts, and a chart that shows their product by hex size, thread size, length, heat range a complete breakdown in back of the application catalog. A valuable tool if you can find them.

The three most dangerous words..."I have heard".

Nothing wrong with Accel plugs, many many users here and elsewhere. I believe they are made by NGK.

I use the Accel with my angle plug BB Eddy's and have had no trouble.

Just ask for the Accel shorty equivalent. I do put an insulating sock on the spark plug boot head because it is quite close, but it is still a lot roomier than the Champion.
