I'm trying to help a friend out here. My friend is the second owner of an AAR. He's had it since the 70's, but the car was raced by the original owner since day 1.

Recently, my friend put promax plates on his six pak carbs, and while he was at it, he removed this part (see pictures) from the center carb. He has no idea what it is/does, and everything seems to work fine without it. He says it's from the center carb & there's 2 screws in the back of the carb with a window that hold it in.

I've never had my own six pak carbs apart, so that doesn't mean much to me. Does anyone know what this thing is/does?
Should he put it back on?

Hot Idle Compensator... It is a bi-metalic strip that when heated deflects opening a passage which creates a minor vacuum leak.. With out it there is always a minor vacuum leak.. Put it back...

Is it a California emissions thing?

Where could one get one of these pieces if it is missing?
