i tested everything accourding to the procedure that someone posted a link to . i tested the resistor, the ECU , the distributor, and still cant figure it out.
it does have spark when i pull the wire off to test it. it is getting fuel to the carb, i probably only poured 2 ounces down the carb , may be i should try more , i just didnt want to start a big fire!
i checked the distributor timing 3 times to make sure it was on the compression stroke firing.
i think it must have fired at least once since the plug i pulled was a little black , and they were new plugs.
it has sat a while since being built. must be at least 2 or 3 months.
i am going to check over everything again and may be try it tomorrow.

Turn the ignition switch to "on" position and then cross the relay with a screwdriver. I had trouble with an ignition switch in the column that did not always provide power to the ECU. Sometimes when releasing the key from the start position to on power was lost, sometimes not. Since this is an initial start-up it wouldn't hurt to raise the idle some so when it does start you keep the lifters rotating.

FWIW 2 oz is not enough to fire a six pack. It has very long runners. I filled my primary bowl full when I fired mine for the 1st time. id you pull the coil wire and crank and check for spark? Did you pull a plug wire, jam a screw driver in it and check for spark? With the key "on" did you check the ballast side of the coil? you said you had 6v at the coil...that is not enough juice.

Are the carbs fresh too? If so, how do you know the float height is right? With this much cranking you should have plenty of gas in the center carb if you pop out the sight plug you should be able to find some signs of gas. Also when pumping the throttle by hand, does the accelerator pump spray fuel? FWIW, I started my last fresh engine up with an electric fuel pump to avoid fuel supply issues on the first start-up.

Check the pick-up gap in the distributor. It should be gapped .004 to.008.

The guy that built the motor stopped in this morning. he put a cloths pin on the choke flap to hold it open, pumped the throttle and said give it a try. i jumped in and hit the key and it fired up instantly!

the only other thing i did was charge the battery up to 13.5V this time. it was at 12.5 before.

it ran smooth and everything seems good. we let it run for probably a half hour at 2000 - 2500 rpm probably.

the only problem was that the alternator wasnt charging and before he shut the motor off he reved it up and the alternator shot lightning out of its self. it looked like a scene from back to the future right before he warped through time.

thanks for all the good advice, kenny
