On my 70 Roadrunner the original which I recently had rebuilt Carter AVS doesn't seem to be opening the secondaries. I had the car in the tranny place for him to set the kickdown linkage and he remarked to me that something doesn't appear to be right with the motor. It is not a tranny problem he says. The tranny kicks down but the car will not seem to go past 70 mph till I let up off the gas when I am in kickdown mode. My mechanic looked at it and did some tinkering and said the secondaries on stand still seem to be opening but after driving it there is just no power at kickdown. So he now thinks the secondaries are not opening. You don't get that massive pull from the motor. Everything is new. My mechanic said he was going to do a fuel pressure test to rule out the fuel pump. With 3:55 gears and the motor bored 30 over you would thing that I could at least squeel the tires but no luck. What should I be looking for or checking?

With the hood open and air cleaner off you should be able to blip the throttle with it running and see the secondary air valve open up. Make sure its not too tight. Checking for lack of fuel flow is a good ideal too.

But will you be able to tell if they are opening fully? I believe this carb has manual secondaries.

yes the carb has manual secondaries and it's easy to tell if they open all the way , there is a spring on the linkage on the pass side of the carb and if they are hitting something the primaries will open fully but not the secondaries .

JUST BE SURE TO STAND BY THE SIDE IF THE CAR WHEN PERFORMING THIS TEST,NOT IN FRONT OF IT.

Don't they have a choke interlock to prevent the secondaries from opening until the choke is fully open?Maybe it's out of adjustment.I would check by looking down the carb. at W.O.T. to check.Oh yeah, do it with the engine off.

There is a choke interlock to the secondaries. The air valve is adjustable. Check them both out.

Another good check is, with engine off, have some one get in the car and hold the gas pedal to the floor. Take a flashlight and look down the carb and make sure all throttle valves are open.

You will see the Secondary Air Valve flip open if its working correctly.

Well I played around with the secondary valve and adjusted it for 2 turns counterclockwise and no secondaries. Then I loosened it up 1 turn and still no secondaries opening. What is the deal with this factory carb. Were these AVS carbs junk to begin with? Looks like after all these years and even being totally rebuilt I am going to have to junk it and go with an Edelbrock.

Where do you think the Edelbrock originated ?

No. Not since I put the new one on when I finished restoring the car. I even took the car back to the tranny guy to set the kickdown lever and he was the first to notice there was something wrong with the carb.

Difference is the old rebuilt carb is 38 years old and is not always going to work correctly and the new Edelbrock should work with no problem right out of the box.

Try removing the cable. Then open the carb, see if the rear shaft lever is moving on the carb.

just push down on the secondary air valve & see if it will open, shouldn't take much then loosen the screw/button for the thin coil spring that holds it closed & get it as loose as you want then take it out & your secondaries will open & you'll know if that is the problem. Have it warmed up as mentioned there is an interlock.

HUH!
I did all that. Loosen the screw so the flap opens up all the way with the spring. Then go counterclockwise 2 turns and tighten the screw. I even set it looser with only 1 turn and it still does not work. With the motor running,if you hit the throttle it looks like the secondary flap is only opening up a third of the way. Plus I had to stop because doing that caused the carb to backfire and I didn't want to start a fire.

Also I know nothing about an interlock. Didn't see anything in the shop manual about such thing.
