Not trying to be a wise guy, but you'll be way better off fixing the problem of why it won't start. Adding an electric pump will do nothing but create more problems.

I'm using one of these mounted on the frame rail near the mechanical pump. It's not too noisy so I let it run whenever the engine is running. I've been using it for a couple of years.

yeah your right i apprecaite your reply

, i should of explained better !! after a long trip , stop switch off !!! let it sit for half hour , get back in !! the heat soak has evaproated all the gas out the edelbrock avs , have blocked the heat crossover with the correct felpro vally pan & the recomended insulating spacer between carb & intake !
so be nice just a fewe seconds of electric pump , then crank the motor ! instead of cranking it for 15 -30 seconds!

Just bypass the mechanical pump and run an electric pump. I can't even hear mine when the engine is running. But I can hear it when the engine is off, which I like, because I know the pump is filling the carb bowl with fuel. And yes, it's nice, because I can let it sit for weeks, come back and not have to crank the hell out of it to get fuel back into the carb.

What is the reasoning behind wanting to run two fuel pumps instead of one electric pump?

stock fuel lines. pre-bent. the only reason i can think of. you have to admit, fabricating lines is a PITA.

In my case the reason for the second pump was simplicity. The car was completed and running. The problem I had is the typical Carter/Edelbrock/evaporating fuel problem. When the car sat for a week or so it was a PITA to get started. I added the inexpensive second pump up front on the frame rail. The whole process took less than an hour and the cost was less than $50. In my opinion, much more simple than mounting a pump in the rear in the proper location with plumbing and electrical etc.. Who knows, it may quit working next week but so far after two years it's working fine.

Running an electric pump ahead of the mechanical can lead to disaster and is not recommended by many that I know. I have seen over the years when the electric pump overpowers the mechanical and ruptures the diaphragm pushing fuel not only into the carb but also filling the crankcase. This cases very costly engine destruction as gas is a very poor lubricant. It is also something that if happens it is very likely to go un-noticed till too late. It may not happen often but it does happen. Roll the dice and take your chances.

run 2 y pipes with check valves in it.

that way your electric is in parallel with the mechanical, and will not restrict flow.

put a check valve on the out put of both pumps and you don't have a back flow issue either.

I have a Carter back by the tank which is great when the car has been sitting for a while. I just run the mechanical pump when cruising. At the strip, it dies around 800' if I forget to turn it on. It's the Carter street vane type pump. I have a 410" SB.

Yeah from what I understand an electric pump is not designed to be used WITH a mechanical pump. I can see it causing the electric one to be overworked or potential damage to the mechanical one. My hemi has a billet cam so I had to go electric. I wasn't gonna take a chance on my motor eating a bronze tip pushrod. I got one of the new black and chrome holleys. It's quiet and fills the bowls quickly for a no hassle start after extended sitting!

Why go through all that crap when a proper installation of an electric pump would be the same or less work?

Yes, but it's not like you need to replace all the fuel lines. Pull the mechanical pump and install a block-off plate. A couple inches of rubber or a threaded fitting, depending on your setup, is all that's needed to eliminate the mechanical pump completely. Then at the back by the fuel tank you need to make a small section to put in the electric pump. I've done this on a few of my own vehicles, some were easier than others to do this to but none were a big issue.

Now I know it's not a Mopar but in the 1973 and up carbed Datsun 240z they use both an electric and a manual fuel pump for heat soak, vapor lock, and cold start issues. Just kinda gave the fuel a little extra push right when the key was turned on. Works very well on those cars actually.

I don't think copper has the strength of stainless or regular steel lines.
All EFI cars need return lines. Not sure if they are needed on carbureted cars.

Well you don't need all that fancy stuff to run an electric fuel pump, but I can see there's no point in trying to argue it with you.
