Are any of you guys running one of these coils. I would like to replace the coil on my '85 Ram D150. It has a 4bbl 360 with MP ign. The directions say that it can be used with stock ign setups, but what about the ballist resister?

"Most late model vehicles with electronic ignitions do not require a ballast resistor, check your ignition and manufacturers specifications to determine if a ballast is required in your application."

I have one but ain't run it yet. I think no ballast required w MSD multistrike but some ballast with an ECU. Been some very comprehensive threads on ballast requirements lately, Might google "moparts ballast resistors" & see if you can retrieve it. iirc somewhere between .25 and .8 ohms but dont quote me on that figure

I saw this on Classracer:

"The coils I mentioned are for the MSD 6series analog boxes, the Blaster II's ( cylinder style) heat soak quick and loose performance once that happens. The TFI style coils don't heat soak and have solid output for any length of time of use. The coil for best effort for the MSD 6al2 boxes would be the MSD 8253 coil. When your trying to run an index or the same every pass then a drifting coil is not what you want. I hope this helps.

I have been having some heat soak problems with my Barracuda. I thought it was the old MSD-6A box, but after seeing this I think it might be the Blaster 2 coil I bought to go with it. I haven't gotten around to testing the box and coil on a bench test. It looks like this guy recommends using the Ford TFI coil (E-coil).

this is an epoxy filled coil. no ballast required unless you have points.

Well it seems the 8202 is oil filled and and will not work in the stock location on the engine. I ordered P/N 8222 epoxy filled, which can be installed in any position.

my bad on the # mix up (fat fumble fingers)! still no ballast required on the E coil unless you are running points

Ma used oil filled ones that are supposed to be as far as I know vertical mounted, horizontle w no probs. Not sure if MSD's oil filled are different and would have a problem there (horizontle). I agree an E coil is the best way to go but I'm wondering is the coil what's having the heat soak prob?

i've had my MSD blaster 2 (oil filled) mounted side-way forever (6pac setup) and never had a problem with leakage or over-heating. but i also run an MSD 6 ecu so over-heating wouldn't be an issue.

Michael, I have an iirc 8202 from a swap meet that I want to try & I may just mount it vertical as it's my DD (OE ECU) & dont want even a minor breakdown. Not sure how much ballast I'll use

A couple of years back I got a MP coil, it was a MSD blaster 2. Well I installed it on my 440, bolted it to the intake with a stock type coil brkt, so it was horizontal. I was running the MP ign setup with it, well it didn't take it long to puke its oil out of the top... . I quess I should have got the epoxy filled instead. That is why I am going with the epoxy filled in the truck. I want to mount it in the stock location.

it's one of the (65) darts, the red beat up one. The white one with the perfect body that came from Arizona has a 451 (B) slowly coming together for it and if that's not enough there's a 4.5" stroker crank (RB) that magically appeared on my kitchen floor the other day. That'll be 535 cubes) in less than a 3000 lb vehicle

so you're building a rocket ship camouflaged as a dart? not knowing what the ecu type is and assuming it's a 'newer' box i'm gonna say you don't need the ballast. the coil you have is a blaster 2 which would be a true 12volt coil and wouln't need a ballast. as to mounting it side-ways, all i can say is there are a bunch of 6 pac guys here running blaster 2 coils in stock locations and if they leaked, there would be hell to pay

the OE (mopar) 4 pin required a 1.2 ohm ballast and i know i'll get flamed for that response. if i remember from your past posts, you're using a parts store ECU (which i think is fine following your K.I.S.S and frugalness theory which i also agree on) so i would suggest you follow the recommendation for that box. most likely it was a direct replacement box so a 1.2 should be ok. but again, you don't need it for the coil.

The blaster 2 PN 8202 is a made in china pile of crap! The mexican made ones of years ago were good.
